Hi There,
Make sure all of your connections are tight, and that the RAM, HD connector, and anything else you've touched is seated correctly.
If you tried to put more RAM in than the computer will allow, it will not turn on. If you've unclipped a wire somewhere or your RAM isn't seated correctly, it will malfunction.
Check and then double check everything.

I forgot my password to log on to my account. I have an IBM thinkpad 240. It's at least 5 years old. Is there anyway to restore the factory settings.

I imagine you have Windows XP. If so, try this:
Start the computer in safe mode.
Choose the Administrator account. If your computer is like 90% of the computers I've seen, no one has password-protected this account.
Once in, go to the control panel and choose Users; From there, you can change your password to one you remember.
Next time don't forget it.

It wants to check everything that a connection requires, and i've 1 " part " fails, the whole connection goes down.

You have faulty RAM modules. Reseat your RAM modules, to make sure they make proper connection. If this doesn't work take them to your friendly computer shop and ask them to test them for you.

FN pg up pg up. It that is not it try settings> control panel> sounds and multimedia> audio> volume Make sure the volume control and wave sliders are a least past the halfway point.
