Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

I have an older 1/2 HP Craftsman garage doors. Recently 1 of the doors will start down and goes back up. I have checked for obstructions and adjusted my sensors on both sides and still can't get it to go down past this one point. It goes up without issue. Any thoughts?

Do these steps and you should resolve the issue, the adjuster are at the back if the motor head, make very small adjustments, keep trying it, but before adjusting anything do this: make sure the door is not binding, clean and re-lubricate all the tracks/guides/runners and wheels with spray Lithium white grease, this may be the problem, u can get this spray grease. at any good any hardware store.
here are further instructions on adjusting the door opener limits and safety sensitivity.

Up/down limits
With the door in a closed position, press the open button. If the door does not open completely but opens at least 5 feet, the limit-adjustment screw needs to be turned clockwise. If the door closes partially but not completely, the down-adjustment screw needs to be turned counterclockwise.

Force
If the door reverses when it is closing, first check to make sure that the sensors are not being blocked by anything; if not, increase the down force. If the door does not open at least 5 feet, increase the up force.

Safety reverse
All garage door openers today come with a safety reverse feature to prevent harm to people, pets, and objects that may be in the way when the door is closing. To test this feature, place a 2 by 4 across the garage door’s threshold. Press the close button; if the door stops but does not ascend immediately, turn the screw on the down limit clockwise by one-quarter. Then test the safety reverse system again.

Craftsman 1/2hp garage door opener works fine to open door but to close I have to hold button down. If not, door won't move and lights flash 10 times.

10 flashes mean sensors are obstructed... something is in the way of the door or they are not facing each other. Clear the obstruction or realign the door and it will work.

The down adjustment broke off

Check the micro switch that will be activated when the door reaches the closed position. It might need to be readjusted as it is supposed to be activated just as the door reaches the fully closed position to stop the further movement of the door. If it does not get activated at that point the door will try to open further but sence an "obstruction" and start opening again as a buildt in safety measure for protection against possible injury or damage to property.

LiftMaster Pro 1/2 hp 41AS050-1 won't shut. when

Check the resistance down button (There is one for down and another one for up). You may need to adjust the sensitivity. That way even if for some reason the have hard time coming down, less sensitivity may solve that issue.

Garage door opens about 4 inches, stops, then goes back down. No flashing lights at all. One sensor light is green, the other is a steady yellow. What's the issue?

something may be obstructing the door, so pull the red emergency release handle and try to pull the door manually.if you cant move it manually, call for professional help

make sure all snow and debris are clear of the area where the door closes

if there are no obstructions, manually set the adjustment controls on the back side of the opener panel. weather can sometimes change the amount of force needed to open/close. adjust the setting with a screwdriver to no more than 260 degrees, about 3/4 of a turn

you may need to adjust limit switches in back of operator. Most of the time with this problem one of the gears inside the operator has stripped out.

My older Craftsman garage door opener comes down about 6" & then goes back up. I just replaced all the rollers o& the opener worked fine. Then I tightened the chain on the opener & it worked ok...

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door goes back up it is a door sensor problem. You chain should sag just a little. If you tighten it too much it will click as it goes over the sprocket. You can increase the down force which is an adjustment near where all those white wires go. A 1/4 turn should be enough. Release the door from the opener and operate it by hand. It should move freely and when you have the door approximately waist high it should stay put. Neither raising nor closing.

Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door goes all the way down, then back up. The lights do not blink. Checked for obstructions, none. Nothing blocking the sensors. What can I do to fix this?

If the door is hitting the floor and then reversing you need to adjust the 'down limit' which is on the side of the motor unit. Turn it a bit in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking may be necessary.

Have to hold the push button inside my garage to close garage.

You have a door sensor problem. Make sure the sensors are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking. Also check the wiring.

My craftsman 1/2 hp garage door starts to close and then opens up

I had a simular issue, except mine was that the previous owner decided to mess with all the settings and mounts and screwed everything up.

The problem isn't your force sensors its your downwards stopping sensor on the opposite side of the opener. For me I had to take the entire panel off and replace the sensor back in its holder, but try adjusting that sensor setting (clockwise goes down, counterclockwise goes up).

If that doesn't work then i dunno:)

Also set both force settings in between 0-1, for some reason with mine if i set it higher it would set them off....
