Do I only add enough soap in the despensor for 1 load or do I fill it and the machine puts the amount needed in?

1 load worth at a time. The dispenser should add water to the same area you ad your detergent to. Just fill it as you normally would. 1/2 to 1 cap full then your fabric softner and bleach in the other dispensers (if your machine has them)

Washing machine faberic softner try fills with water when in use.

hot water valve inside unit may be faulty ck it to make sure that it is powering up and then make sure it is operating. the cold and hot valve are one unit on most washers so the unit is replaced as one. if its a front loader than there might be a one way ck valve malfunctioning or the unit keeping intoducing water into the unit even though it is at the level it should be at. top loader then the level sensor is jacked and needs replaced.

Water fills dispensers

A small amount of water left in them is normal but if they are totally filled something is wrong. Do you still have the blue pieces in the bleach and softner cups? If they're missing they will not empty right. You may also have build up in the holes that the liquid should go down that you may have to clean out.

GE front loading washer softener dispenser does not dispense

After you put your normal softener into the dispenser, top it with water. The remaining water the machine will pour in. You can even try cleaning it with a toothbrush first.
