Tuner stops responding to remote control, though led flashes to show the signal is getting through. Still switches on and off by remote, but may switch on again with green zigzag screen. Works again if switched off for 30 seconds: frustrating.

Re: tuner stops responding to remote though led
Well, if the remote has any kind of function working the set I would say the set is ok. Try replacing the batteries, if that doesn't help, then run to your local retail discount store and grab a cheapo universal remote, program it and see. If that fails then in the shop it goes. ( I doubt it tho )

The indicator lED at the remote control do flash, means it does not work properly. Check the remote control for its infrared emission. Check it with fresh batteries. Check it by pressing all the keys. You can detect the presence of infra-red emission from the remote control, using a cell-phone camera. Even though your TV s remote control emits infrared light, it might have not sufficiant frequency as it supposed to be. The fault with its resonator crystal inside the circuit board need replacement. It will look like this. Replace it with exact frequency marked on it.

Usually when this happens it is because the door is open and the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Try loosening the chain to relieve the pressure on the trolley and then close the door. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit and turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Now tighten the chain.
There is an "eye" on the front of the TV, its behind a red window, make sure it is not blocked or REALLY dirty. Those remotes are pretty powerful and can bounce off walls, Look at the remote LED through a digital camera, you can see the light flash, quick test to see if it is working.
First check if the remote control is sending an infrared signal. If the LED is flashing, this does not mean the Remote control is sending the IR signal. There is a separet Infrared LEd that sends the signal. To check the IR, point the remote control in a video camera or any camera with real-time monitor (phone cam, webcam, etc.) and press any button. You will see a white flash coming from the Remote control. thjis works best if the camera is black&white, for color camera, the IR is still visible but quite faint.
Another way of checking the IR (if you do not have a camera) is to press the RM in front of another device with remote control and while doing so, press the correct remote control . If that other does not function or functions erratically, then the remote control in question is emitting an IR signal.
If there is no IR coming out, the solder conection of the IR LED might be the problem. It is rare that the IR LED will be damage because the remote control is only 3 volts.
If the remote control does emit an IR signal, then the TV remote reciever is defective.
I had this problem with a CD player that I have fixed. The IR reciever looks like an LED (dark colored) with three pins (V+, signal, ground). Cost less than $3
