Question about Creative Labs ZEN Vision:M Digital Media Player

Repairing my Zen Vision M myself

I purchased an "as is" Creative Zen Vision M 30 gb off of Ebay. The guy said that he got a message saying Hard disk problem. I figured I could just reformat it myself. Well, when I received it, it turned on & went to the menu with no problem. There was no apparent problem with the hard disk. BUT when I'd go to try to connect it with my computer, nothing. I found mycreativefansite.com & did some troubleshooting tips they suggested, but still to no avail. I tried buying a new USB cord. Still no good. I tried connecting it to 3 different computer with 2 different operating systems and again, nothing. I have to believe that the issue is obviously with the vision m. Oh yes, & I do have a Zen V Plus 2 gb that connects with no problem at all. So now, I'm wondering if I could possibly get another "as is" Vision player & swap out parts. The problem would be of course, which part? It the connector a part of the main board & would it be the main board that has the problem or the connector itself? Any help here would be appreciated.     Like I said, I had tried it on THREE different computers with no luck. The strange thing that I failed to mention, is that it does charge from the computer. As soon as I connect the USB, it either shows a flashing lightening bolt or the "plug in" or charged icon in the top right corner. I guess that's what really throws me & why I haven't completely stopped troubleshooting this thing. I do have WMP 11, I did dl the recovery tool. I forced a manual install of the portable device & it does show up now in device manager but with a yellow exclamation. I tried unplugging & plugging the player back in after I did that & a balloon popped up briefly saying something like device not connected that happened once though.

    same problem - similar debugging done - USB device is not recognized - can NOT coaz a beep on the OS from this device - days of creative are numbered ..if this is how they take car of thier customers...

Yes the connector has been know to break (bad solder)
here's some other things to try:

Make sure you have media player 11
If you can, the best test is to try your player with another PC, to see if you still have the problem. This localises whether the problem is with the PC (most likely the USB) or the player. See the link below (search on "connection problems") for a lot more troubleshooting on this.
Download recovery tool off creative's website.
go to my computer > click on hardware tab >
click on device manager button > in the is next screen on the bottom should have>>universal serial bus controllers
(write these down just in case it cant find them)
right click on them and uninstall
reboot let windows reinstall them

Also told Microsoft hotfix causes this problem try uninstalling the last hotfix

    a yellow exclamation. is the problem you have to get it to install the correct driver, delete it and have it re-fine it
    download the drivers from creatives website or if you have the cdrom and when it ask you to install the driver choose location of the cdrom or files you downloaded

The heading for your question says "Creative Zen Vision:M Digital media" I do not think that there was an 8GB Vision M. I have a 30 GB Vision M and I think there was only a 30 and a 60 GB of that model.Perhaps you have another model, and it could be a 20gb, as that what you may be seeing. The device can be in totally MSC connection mode, seeing the player as a removable disk. Check the setting on the player:

When the amount of disk space in the removable disk mode is set to its highest capacity, there will be no memory left for the player using the Creative software program on the computer to put media on the device.

Decrease the amount of hard disk space to minimum, to recover memory for transferring media with the media software.


When the procedure above gives no result, reinstall the firmware. Have a download from the support page mentioned above (Europe).
Outside Europe: access the support page from your country for the required firmware.

I have a 30 GB player but it says that there is nothing there


You may have damaged your hard drive. Slide the Power switch towards the Power icon and hold the switch in the Power On position.
Push the end of a pin-like object into the reset hole, press gently and remove. Click on Scan Disk. If ther is an error, you may have to replace your Hard Drive

My USB port, no longer recognizes the Creative M, yet it charges it the same way?


If you can't connect through USB anymore (also no reaction on you computer and no sign of connecting on the screen of the player),
you are going to need a new logic board. I know only one place that repairs creative zen players and sells the parts besides ebay obviously. If you just want to get the music out you can stick the hard drive on an iPod video logic board (they are compatible) and use a utilty like sharepod to extract the music.

I can't say this will work for you, but I had exactly the same problem (I think the clicking noise has something to do with the hard disk being slightly dislodged - possibly after dropping it?). I found that giving the side of the Zen a sharp smack on my knee sorted it out.
