Hmmm..not too happy..sounds like your video card is not too good...try it in safe mode(F8) and then check the video card in control panel, then system, then device manager. make sure driver is clean.

got backup?

Remove ALL media from the machine DVD, CD, USB, etc. Check/reseat all Monitor cables. Reboot. If that fails, unplug , plug back in in 30 seconds or so. reboot, if you get a Dell Logo, Open the boot Menu and select Boot from HDD first.

If you hit <F12> key upon boot-up and the monitor displays a boot menu, then you probably have an issue with your XP software. Meaning that you may have to re-install XP (by the way, XP is no longer supported).

I am trying to use my Dell 4700 PC, when I choose a user from the Windows menu it goes directly to blue screen, I have the reinstall disk for my windows XP, but I am not sure when or if I can use it.

Turn on your computer, put the windows xp disk in the drive and turn the computer off. Restart the computer to see if it automatically recognizes the disk in the drive. If it does, you should see a message that says press any key to boot from cd. Go ahead and press a key to boot from the windows xp disk and then follow the prompts for restoring your pc.

Sometimes it takes a couple of restarts for the pc to see that there is a disk in the drive.

If you run into any problems, please contact me or use the reply or comment links by your question on Fixya to report the trouble and I will continue helping until this issue is solved.

When you first start your computer how do get it to read the disc first?

You go into Boot Menu, and set the - first boot device to CDROM.
The computer will then read what is in the optical drive, first.

Computer off, press the Power On button. Watch closely for the blue dell logo.
Looking at the bottom of the monitor screen when the blue Dell logo comes up, you will see - F2 = Setup.
At the top right of the screen you will see F12 = Boot Menu.

This screen goes by F-A-S-T!
As SOON as you see the blue Dell logo press the F12 key.

If you miss this small window of opportunity, just wait for Windows to fully load, then click on Start, Turn Off Computer, and Restart.

If Windows is not loading, then press the CTRL, ALT, and DELete keys at the SAME TIME. (Not shouting)
This will restart your computer so you can try again.

Upon entering Boot Menu you cannot use your mouse anymore, you have to use the keyboard.

The Boot Device Menu has the devices listed, and each device has a number next to it.

At the bottom of the menu, type the number that is next to CDROM, then press the Enter key.

This is Dell Support, and the main page for the Dell Dimension 4700 Service Manual,

Left-click on - Entering System Setup
