I got tired of Vista incompatabilities and decided to install XP on my eMachines T5230. It solved my game problems but the network and sound didn't work. I just downloaded the Vista sound drivers and software and that solved the sound problem. I'm having trouble locating PCI drivers and getting the network interface to work. The network appears to be built into the motherboard and according to windows it is all nVidia chips. But I haven't got anything to work on the NIC or the PCI. Fortunately the video is working well on the generic VGA compatable driver that XP applied but I'm sure I wouldn't get all the nifty performance I paid for with that nVidia chipset without a better driver. Surely someone has solved this. Any ideas?

I solved this problem completely later that day.
Here's how:

From the Emachines site I downloaded and installed the file:
RealTek_Audio_5_10_0_5152.

This dirver is for vista but it must also be for XP because it really worked well.

This can be found at www.emachines.com
click on: customer care > product support and downloads.

Then select desktops, T-Series, and T5230.
By clicking the plus sign [+] next to downloads below you will see a list of drivers including:

Realtek High Definition Audio Driver

be sure to click on the Driver File Download (36.29 MB) and not just the readme file.

download this to your computer and run the self extracting install.
Then right click on the MyComputer icon (on your desktop or windows explorer) and choose Hardware tab and Device Manager to verify that the RealTek audio device is working properly.

You'll see the other broken devices there of course.

I went to www.nvidia.com and downloaded:

nvidia is easy to navigate. Just click on Download Drivers

The GeForce 6150SE video card driver

From Option 1 select GeForce, GeForce 6 Series, Windows XP and click the Search button. Then click download now. to save the file to your computer so you can click on it there to perform the driver install. This made a huge difference in the quality of my display.

nForce 430 chipset driver installers

From Option 1 select nForce, nForce 4 Series, GeForce 6150SE/nForce 430, driver, windows XP. Then click search followed by Download Now to save the file to your computer for installation.

This took care of everything but the generic PCI device.
For that, I hooked my legitimate copy of Windows XP to the internet using my newly functional RJ-45 network jack and an ethernet cable and let windows find the driver for me. Which it did seemlessly. No More Yellow questionmarks in the Device Manager!

That was mostly painless.

I noticed that some quicktime programs didn't like my nVidia driver so I created an alternate hardware profile to use the generic windows video driver and that solved that problem too.

I didn't have to open the case on the emachine and I still have the Vista install disk that came with it if I want to go back.

I'm impressed that my games work fine on XP home when the didn't on Vista. I expected it to be the other way arround.

Are you using a full version retail or OEM copy of WIN XP to install? Or is it a recovery copy from another PC or laptop? You will need to use a full version disc to perform the retrofit. You will also need to download the WIN XP Drivers for your laptop from the Dell Site. You CANNOT "upgrade" install WIN XP over VISTA and keep your drivers, settings, files. Performing a WIN XP install will require a total wipe of your hard drive. Therefore you will have to save off all your personal files before you do this. Microsoft doesn't provide assistance for downgrade-type installations, so you must basically wipe your hard drive and then reload the OS.

I cant find video driver for windows vista as well as windows xp

please specify the name of the manufacturer of your video device. Is it gForce Nvidia? or something like that. Also, make sure to download the supporting driver files from the website of your laptop's manufacturer. There in their site, files are stored categorically. Go to Video Drivers and download and install.

Drivers for Compaq Presario C790EI

You will need to go to the manufacturers website for each component and download the XP drivers for each one. In other words, if video device is a Radeon Mobility - go to the ATI website and download and install the XP driver for the Radeon Mobility card. Do this for each peripheral you need a driver for. I suggest saving all the driver files and burning them to a CD for safekeeping should you ever need them again.
