Sometimes what happens is the toner seeps onto and into places where only a vacuum and crevice tool and a brush will remove it.
It will get anywhere and everywhere, and wind up on the strenghtning flanges, it can be tricky and frustraiting to remove all of it.
Persistance and a smaller vacuum will most likely be what will allow you to resolve it.
Also take a look at your toner cartridge and be sure it is not leaking. There is no use going through all that, only to have it come right back.

The areas you need to vacuum would be those areas you can access by opening all latches, and removing all cartridges.

Just be cautious and make sure you open all covers and chutes.

Note how the cartridges remove and install.

I really want to stress to look for a leaky cartridge. They will develope weak magnets and worn blades from time to time that will cause toner or developer to leak out.

At times, no matter how much you vacuum, wipe, ect, you may just have to run it out. I have had times when I just couldn't get all the ink out and had to settle for running the machine until it ort of self cleans.

I have a Brother HL1240 printer. When I print I get toner stains on the left margin. Is this a cartridge problem or is it the printer itself? I guess I'm wondering if I change the toner cartridge...

in most case this kind of issues arise if your drum is not cleaned properly with the wiper. As the printer becomes old, the wiper that cleans the drum might get reduced in size...
so it has to be checked at the first.

I HAVE BLACK ON THE ENTIRE LEFT SIDE OF THE PAPER. About a 1 inch margin on the whole left side of every page has black on it.

Looks like a defective drum unit. Take out the drum with toner and look at the shiny (usually) green cylinder on the bottom. If it's constantly covered with toner, it means that either it got dirty from something or the silicone gasket strip that removes the toner from it is "leaking".
Remember that the green drum is very delicate and should not be exposed to light for a prolonged time. If you want to try and clean it, use the softest cloth or tissue you can find, dampened slightly in isopropyl alcohol, and use very delicate stroking motion, applying nearly no pressure.

The printer is printing lines across each page (usually one of each toner color, sometimes only black)

the toner cartridge is near to empty so the powder collected on the wastage side is getting leaked when ever you give a printout and that leaked powder creates a line on the paper. or there is a dust collected in the lower area of the printer by the leaked tonner. replace the cartridges or get refilled it properly.to make this problem clear.

Lines down both the left side of the printouts.

good day,

this usually occurs when you print large volume of copies of documents that goes beyond the printable area of the paper, some powders stick in the roller of your printer hence making the gray streak.

you can check if the rollers have accumulated some powder, if so, have the rollers cleaned.

i hope this will help.

-drum blade is not cleaning well, take out toner look at the shiny cylinder ( drum) is there toner on it? change cartridge.

- transfer roller ( black roller on bottom of machine that comes in contact with drum) take lint free cloth and wipe may need to be changed,
