Question about Emerson MW8102SS 1100 Watts Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Sharp carousel II microwave oven. Will not come on. If I bump it, it used to come on. This went on for amonth or two then it quit. The "bumping" no longer works. It makes a beep and a click sound when I press the start botton but does not come on any more. I assume some kind of switch is not making proper connection. I have checked for loose wires etc. at every connection I could see.

Thanks for your suggestions. The fuse is good. Whenever the oven would come on, it always stayed on until it had run the course. It never started and then quit. It is a question of not starting...just the beep and a click sound. As I said before, when the problem first started and for a while, if I bumped it, it would come on and operate normally...and maybe work okay for the next several times. Then it got where bumping didn't do any good.

Does this give you a clue as to what part would respond to a bump, but later quit altogether? If so, please tell me how to locate the part and how to test it.

    Thanks.

I assume you have read the previous comments.
To repeat, I have carefully checked the fuse and all the wire connections that I can see. (I have removed the cover) Also checked the three switches which are operated when the door is closed. All are okay.
When the problem first started (unit would not turn on), if I bumped it, it would usually start and run normally. A month or so later, it would not respond to the bumping.
Does this not give you a clew as to a part that responded to bumping a few times but then did not respond. When I press the start button, all that happens is the beep sound and a click.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your efforts to help me. I realize it is difficult to solve a problem when you can't see the item. I have some experence in repairing appliances but not micro ovens. I have checked the fuse and all the wire connections. They are all okay. There is no sign of over-heating.

I am still curious about this one question. When the problem first started, if I bumped the oven on the side or top, it would come on and work normally. This happened about 10 to 15 times and then it got where the bumping did not work. My question is, does this idea of the fact that "bumping" made it work for a while then it quit working, give you a clew as to what part might respond to "bumping" a few times but later quit working?

I thought if this would point to a certain part as the bad one, I might take the chance of replacing that part.

    Thanks again.

Hi,
There are multiple reasons due to which your microwave is not working:

1. Please check for the fuse as it is normally located on the floor of the chassis behind the control panel or between the door switches.

2. If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

3. If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

4. If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

5. If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

The best thing I would suggest is for you to do a continuity test on the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

    Hi,

I would like if you have confirmed that the fuse is fine, I would like to add that many microwave ovens suffer from intermittent problems caused by excessive moisture from the range/stove entering the microwave cabinet and collecting on the circuitry. Often the problem is with one or two simple connections that may need tightening or soldering. But, to repair these components, the microwave cabinet needs to be opened. So we recommend that you seek the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

My sharp carousel II microwave no longer heats food. Do I need to buy a new one?

The problem maybe the magnetron, or the inverter board if 7 years old or less, and possibly the keypad control board, by the time you add parts and labour cheaper to replace the microwave oven in the long run.

Built-in Sharp Carousel II Microwave Convection Oven died.

There are a couple of safety thermostats in the oven to shut down power if something overheats. One is on the magnetron tube (the microwave source), the other is on the cooking cavity. These sometimes go bad. There's also a power line fuse that may have failed, or become loose in its mounting clips. These can be tested with an ohmmeter; they should all measure very close to zero ohms if they're good.

Another possibility is that the control circuit board in the oven may have failed. I have worked on several Sharp ovens where the power transformer for the board has gone bad for no good reason. If the board goes bad the oven may appear to be dead as well.

Microwave servicing is best left to professionals. If you're thinking of keeping this one, take it to a service shop (or call for home service) and get an estimate. Then decide whether to repair or replace.

Hope this has helped a little. Thanks for using Fixya!

The question is... Do you want to put money on a 18year MW, or put it towards a new one? I must admit I love the SHARP Combo MW Convection ovens. I own two. One is almost 25years old. The mechanical Timer Type, but they work great and I can maintain them with 30years ef exrerience. I am now retired.
It does sound like the Magnetronhas broken down, however it could be other things in the Secondary (High Voltage Side). The High Voltage Side is made up of the Secondary HV side of the High Voltage Transformer, A High Voltage Diode, a High Voltage Capacitor, and the Magnetron. The High Voltage Side is DANGEROUS, and CAUTION should be taken to protect yourself against EXTREME HIGH VOLTAGE. unplug from power and DISCHARGE High Voltage Capaciton to frame GROUND before touching anything!!!!
