Pull the paper tray out, look in the top middle by the roller holder, you will see a black plastic lever (edge actuator) hanging down, it should be flush with the roller, be careful when pushing back in place.

The edge actuator is the lever part of a switch that tells the printer when it has lifted the paper in the tray high enough. With the drawer removed it is the small black plastic tab that hang over the tray. When it gets knocked out of place it doesn't tell the printer to stop and it will try and force the tray higher than it can physically go resulting it the clicking sound of the gears popping. If you unplug the printer take the tray out and turn it pside down you can see a circuit board with a black U shaped sensor. The blade of the lever needs to be reseated past its stop so it can pass through this optical contact. I have fixed several different models of Brother laser printers in this manner.

mschelletoo, this was the answer for me. It took some effort to get it back in place without breaking that little guy, but a tiny screwdriver helped. I removed that litte spring next to it first so I would not wreck it, plus I could see better then. I put the spring back with tweezers. Thank you.

There is a loud clicking sound that comes from the drawer and the paper won't pull through. MFC 8860DN

You can check if the paper guides are set properly by depressing the purple lever on the right front of the tray. The leading edge of the stack of paper should rise out of the tray. If the paper cannot rise, or rises unevenly, you need to adjust the guide on the tray. There should be between 1/16 and 1/18 of play from front to back for the stack of paper in the paper tray.
The loud click sounds alarming, but is not the problem.

Mfc 8660dn - how do i clear the no tray error

That error, usually means that the engine PCB is bad. If you call brother they'll tell you to check the print count, and if it's a certain number, all you can do is replace that PCB. It runs around $400.00.

Makes a clicking sound and won't print

Check the paper tray and make sure there is a 1/16 inch gap between the end of the paper tray and the end of the paper. Too tight and you only get clicking, also if it's a new toner cartridge (generic) sometimes they are too tight to turn.

This is a common issue.
Here is the solution:
Pull out the paper tray
On the left of the feed roller there is a black piece of plastic that is a sensor. It is jammed forward. Gently bend it out to the left and push it back until it snaps back into place.

Be careful not to break it.

I had a similar problem, more of a snapping sound than clicking, but this is what worked for me - pull the paper tray out and "loosen" the rear paper limiter by unlocking it, move it back about 1/8-1/4" and then re-lock it

No Paper Error

You could have two problems. One the paper sensor in the cassette could be jammed or broken, The clicking could be the sensor jammed next to the feed roller. If not it could be the fuser gear is broken.
