Question about Samsung RS2556 Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

Samsung RS2555SW I have a Samsung RS2555SW and the Freezer side is not working properly. It started blinking -4 so I reset it via the panel and then by unplugging it. Neither worked. This happen a month ago and I took everything out of both sides, unplugged it and let the entrie thing defrost. I even removed the back panel of the inside of the freezer and made sure all the ice was off the coils. That seem to work then. Now I am having the blinking -4 thing again and tried to reset, but to no avail. When I hold the door open and push the button in, the fan comes on, although it is a bit noisy when it starts, and there is no cold air coming out of the top part of the freezer. There is cold air coming out of the bottom half. Could this be a fan issue or something else? Thank you for your help.

I just defrosted it a month ago. Everything started working fine and know it started again. We have had this refrigerator for 5 years and it has worked perfect until Dec. 09.

  • 4garbers Feb 01, 2010

The Refrigerator side is totally fine. There is no temp issues. Does that make a difference or would it still be a defrost problem?

  • 4garbers Feb 02, 2010

Okay, we did a force defrost and the freezer is defrosting. I wasn't clear if you meant to use the OHM meter with the thermostat plugged in or out. Either way, out = nothing, in = 2V DC. The fan, when we pulled the inside panel off, was working fine. Does this mean thermostat or do you think adaptive defrost?

Thank you for all your help!

The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can’t flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won’t turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it’s bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it’s in the defrost mode.

you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located on the back .

Part 6 on this diagram is your defrost control.

It can be a fan issue. You said it's noisy on start up. It could be the fan itself or the fan could be hitting an ice buildup. Take the rear cover inside the freezer and you will know it it's a defrost issue or fan. When there is a defrost problem, it's a gradual thing getting a little worse every day.

Since you could force a defrost that means it isn't going into defrost on it's own when it needs to so it looks like it's the module that's the problem.

The adaptive defrost control that is.

Is the evaporator fan working properly... and the evap coils free of ice?
You may have a defrost timer issue.

Thanks

Refrigerator malfunction

samsung units have duel cooling. that means there is a evaporator in the freezer and the fresh food section. it is possible that the temp sensor in the refrigerator section could be bad. and they have been known to have defrost problems there to. the samsung is a complicated unit and its hard to describe how to repair since there is a lot of electronics that control everything. the best thing I could say is to unplug the refrigerator for a few minuets. sometimes this will reset everything and start the unit back to the factory settings. if that does not work I would call for service. hope it helped you some

Freezer, Ice Maker and Water dispenser not working

it has to get down to the proper temperature after the reset the set point is -4 for the freezer and 38 for the refrigerator. the numbers shown o\n the digital display panel stands for the actual temperatures. When the compartmnet tempertures go down, so do the numbers on thge display panel, and finally they reach the set temperatures. Once the system is stabilized , the display tempoeratures are the set temperature.

Freezer defrost all. RS2556

The most likely is that the door was not closed properly, this is very common on this model, what happens is that the door closes against the freezer contens and therefore appears closed, this allows warm air into the unit which starts to melt the ice, if this should happen again it is a good idea to completely defrost overnight with the doors open and then re start the next morning as ice often builds up behind the rear panel.
