Solution posted here is straight off the HP support site and didn't work for me. However, elsewhere in this forum is something that did!
1. Power down the printer (use on/off button) and remove power cable. Wait 2 minutes.
2. Hold down Help and OK buttons together while plugging in the power cable.
3. I held the buttons for around 5 seconds and when I released them, the printer seemed to go back to a hard reset - all sorted!
Hope this helps!

I did both the power shut down, press help and ok, then the USB cable/cartridge removal. I also removed/replaced some of my cartridges. Last I did another shut down of my computer, just for fun. None of the these seemed to work. My last attempt before going out for a new printer was to swear at it profusely. This, or the culmination of all the previous attempts finally worked.

It took over an hour to recalibrate and work through its processing before it was ready to print again but it seems to work well now. No idea what went wrong or what worked.

SOURCE: Ink System Failure

I myself have not tried this, but apparently it came from HP.

HP Photosmart C5180 show ink system failure message
This was what I was told to do for my C5180. First they told me to do a power drain. This is done by pulling out the power cable and then holding the on/off button for a minute, then putting the power cable back in (this didn't work).
Then we did a master reset. Unplug the printer, then pressing the help and ok buttons simultaneously plug it back in. This sorted it. :)
Have to say it looked like this whole process used up shed loads of ink, so by the time I had finished I needed to replace 3 cartridges!
