Question about HP DeskJet 5550 InkJet Printer

1 Answer

I have an HP deskjet 5550. I had a paper jam earlier but cleared it. After reseting, warning light still comes on. Printer makes clicking noise when I first turn it back on.

Had printer about three years. I wouldn't think any paper would still be jammed. Cannot see anything jammed and paper that was removed when printer jammed has no rips or tears.

  • Calvin W Boaz Feb 01, 2010

It is the print cartridge status light that is blinking.

  • Calvin W Boaz Feb 01, 2010

The status light blinks after I turn printer on and the lights on the side move around and the cartridges move and the thing under the cartridges spin. After everything stops, the light just stays blinking.

Confused-don't see yellow arrow on top of print cartridge. Cartridges was fine before jam, both color and black in cartridges are either brand new or just week old.

First off how long have you owned the printer? There are several possibilities at this point. Possible paper still jammed or damage done to a part while clearing the jam. Once I have more information I can assist you further.
Thank you,
Lee

    Hi,
Ok can you tell me exactly what lights are blinking and when. usually it can be one or two lights and they may blink simultaneously or alternately. It may be very possible that the printer might need repair but I will need more information. If so you would definitely want to consider replacing the printer you can get a printer with much higher quality for as little as 40$.
    Thank you,
    Lee

The print cartridge light is blinking, and the power light is on.

The top access door on the printer might be open, or there might be something wrong with the print cartridge.

    Solution

    1. Check to make sure that the top access door is firmly closed.

    2. If
the light continues to blink, open the top access door. When the top
access door opens, the print carriage moves so the yellow arrow on top
of the print carriage points to a drawing of a cartridge. Each drawing
describes a symptom. Find the drawing in the following table, and then review the solution as necessary.

    1. Drawing inside the access door

      Problem

The color cartridge is missing, improperly installed, or defective, or the wrong print cartridge is installed.

      Solution

      2. If there is a color cartridge in the print carriage, remove the color cartridge and firmly reinsert it.

      3. Make sure the color cartridge is appropriate for the printer.

      4. If the problem persists, replace the color cartridge.

      4. If the problem persists, replace the black cartridge.

Please perform the below steps.

1. Switch off the printer and disconnect the power supply. Allow any residual charge inside the all-in-one printer to dissipate before putting your hands or any metal tools inside the chassis.

2.
Pin down the exact location of the jam. The 3 hot spots for a jam are before a sheet completely leaves the paper tray, anywhere between the feed tray and print carriage or between the print carriage and output tray.

3.
Take off the front paper tray if the sheet jammed while still in the front area of the printer. If here, you should be able to see most of the paper.

4.
Pull the sheet with both hands and steady pressure. Do not tug as you might rip the paper, leaving a piece deeper inside the machine.

5.
Open the back panel to reach paper jammed between the feed-tray area and print carriage. Carefully remove the jammed paper.

6.
Use the carriage access door to get at a jam further inside the printer. You may need to remove the print carriage to get to the jam.

7.
Replace all parts and return any access panels to their closed and locked positions. Plug your printer back in and flip the power switch.

Doesn't print - carriage makes a clicking noise and power/paper lights flash

To confirm once again remove off the printer, reinstall the software, then connect the printer to be installed once again.
Now repeat the test print on the printer, if there is no response, check for the motor mechanism for jamming. Also see that the ink cartridge is moving well if not release any jamming possible from any objects.
If there is not response even after this the servo controller/ processor of the printer is faulty.
Possible error in the main board

Constant yellow blinking light, no paper jam

I found this on the HP support site:

The power light is on, and the resume light is blinking.

c00109831.gifc01272271.gifc00109834.gif The printer might be waiting to complete a print job or to receive data from your computer.

Solution

Wait for the printer to finish the current task. The printer is waiting for the ink to dry on freshly printed paper.

Solution

  1. Remove the paper with fresh ink.
  2. Press the resume button.
The printer might be out of paper.

Solution

  1. Load paper in the paper tray.
  2. Press the resume button.
The printer might have a paper jam.

Solution

Clear the paper jam. If the resume light continues to blink after the paper jam is cleared,

OR

if the print carriage is stuck or making a grinding noise, then follow these steps.

Solution

  1. Lift the top cover of the printer.
  2. Turn the printer off and then on again.
  3. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer when the grinding noise starts. Unplug the power cable from the wall outlet.
  4. Movethe print carriage toward the middle of the printer (this proceduremight take a couple of tries to get the timing correct).
  5. Remove the print cartridges and close the top cover.
  6. Plug the power cord into the back of the printer. Plug the power cord into the wall outlet.
  7. Open the top cover, reinstall the print cartridges, and then close the top cover.
The printer may be ready to eject banner paper.

Solution

Press the resume button to eject the banner paper.

Printer cartridges not moving

Try turning the printer off and unplugging it both from the wall and from the computer. Take the paper out.

Open the paper jam door and gently push the paper roller forward or upward until it clicks. Close the paper jam door.

Leave the printer unplugged for several minutes (15). Then plug it back in. Do not turn it back on yet and restart your computer. then turn on your printer.

I hope this reset works for you. You may have to do it more than once. I've been through this one myself.

Thank you for using Fix Ya! Your ratings are always appreciated.

Will not print / cartridges will not move back and forth

I had this happen to me the other night and I had to restart the printer to get the print job out of the que. You could try that.

While it's restarting, unplug the power cord and the usb cable. That should reset it.

The cartridges are "stuck" in place - won't move left or right - yellow lights is flashing

With the power off. Push the carriage to the left about 4". Power up the printer. It should go through its normal reset. When it's done making noise look in & see if it went back to the center?
Open Printer & Faxes. Your default printer should have a check nex to it. make sure it is the 5550. Click the 5550 once so it's highlighted. Click file & open. Clear anything that is waiting to be printed. Close all the opened windows. Re-start the Pc.
I should list HP's suggestions too:

Try a test page even is so. Post back...

HP 5550 Print issue

When you removed the jammed paper , the jam paper sensor was not reset or positioned correctly. The reason the machine was sending two pieces of paper thru at once was probably due to the paper feed sensor. A lot of H'Ps do this. Try re-aligning the tray and if you pulled the paper out and heard a grinding noise, the whole feed unit is probably out of time.I would only re-install the software as a last resort, since your problem was caused by hardware, not software.
