The words "croquet", "lunette", "Renoir", and "turnstile" all have a common property that virtually no other words have. What is it? Hint: think phonetically.

I don't understand your answer. They are NOT three syllable words, they are two syllable words. They do kind of break down to separate one syllable words I guess: "crow" and K, 'Lou' and net, "wren" and "war" and "turn" and "style". But I don't think that's too unusual.

  • tbrant1969 Feb 02, 2010

I still don't understand how they can be thought of a having three syllables, especially when the puzzler from which they came begins: "Other than being two-syllable words"... what property do they have in common that virtually no other words have? This puzzle comes from a Sunday morning radio program on NPR. The answer will be revealed this Sunday. I'll let you know the results, but I'm betting against your solution. Sorry.

  • tbrant1969 Feb 02, 2010

Ginko's solution is that they are all three-syllable words with a two syllable pronunciation. (???)The puzzle from which these words come clearly says that other than being two syllable words, what other property do they have in common that virtually no other words have?

I am sorry for the negative rating. I am new to this and unaware of the rating system. I am also unfamiliar with written versus spoken or phonetic syllabification. I guess I always assumed they were one and the same. You have given me something to research and have therefore been very helpful. That is why I am so sorry about the negative rating. Can I do anything to correct it?

  • tbrant1969 Feb 02, 2010

It took a couple of explanations, but Ginko finally convinced me that his solution is probably correct. At least he has inspired me to do more research. Thanks G.

    Hi.

What is unusual is that they are indeed three syllable world:

    "cro-qu-et", "lun-et-te", "Re-no-ir", and "turn-sti-le"

And they break into two syllable words, that is my answer to the quiz.

They are three syllable worlds in written syllabification (latin). and two in phonetic English syllabification .

Lu - Net - Te that is three syllables.

Lou - Net that is two syllables.

    that is the solution.

    same the rest.

Many thanks for the negative rating. I will keep my brain away from this kind of questions in the future.

    Goodbye.

I think that they also have two nuclear syllables, that is also uncommon. Probably the two things go together.

Goodbye, and good luck with the puzzle. I do not really mind about the bad feedback.

They all are two syllable words that is the commonality between the three words. But virtually there are a few other words that follow this same style of wordage like inbred and baseball is a good one too.

The turnstile won't turn and right now there are clothes in the washer and it is just sitting. I think the motor is burned out?

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
1. No power to the washer
Make sure there's power getting to the washer. Check for a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Check the wall socket for power. Sometimes the power cord disconnects at the washer, if this is the case, the wiring must be repaired or replaced.

2. Lid switch
The washing machine may not function if the lid switch is defective. The switch is usually located near the door. Replace if found defective.

The microwave turns on, the turnstile turns but the food does not heat up

This is caused by one of two problems, the most likely more common is a bad magnetron, or the high voltage transformer that drives the magnetron is defective. To repair either issue would not be cost effective "more costly" replacement "best option"
