Question about Apple iBook G3 Clamshell (M2453B) Mac Notebook

1 Answer

My ibook g3 clamshell will not boot up properly - it stops and makes a clacking noise at the fourth icon. I have already booted from my repair disk and checked the hardware, memory, etc and it shows no problems. The repair disk is OS 9.0 my current system is 9.2 What is causing the boot sequence to get hungup and how do I fix it?

Check the hard disk, it's probably dying.

It sounds like your start up files are either missing or corrupt. You need to reboot with your system disk in the cd rom (hold down the "C" key as you restart) or do a fresh install of an OS.

It sounds like the system is corrupted. With an install disk try starting the mac up holding down the c key on the keyboard. If the screen is working properly on startup, see if the hard drive is showing up. If it is, try reinstalling the system software making sure that you do not reformat the hard drive but preserve users

I forgot my administrator password for my mac g3

If you are running OS X put the appropriate system disk in the disk drive. Boot up using the c key. Once booted go up to the file menu and go to the reset password menu and reset your password.

Either Hard Drive failure or you need to reinstall the Operating System on the Mac. Good luck.

Clamshell Ibook restore cd's I need everything

The clamshell ibooks came with either OS 8.6 or OS 9 on them. If you are just looking to start over from scratch, then you can use a standard OS 9 CD and have them do a complete re-install. I say this without knowing the nature of the problems they are having.

Your Hard Drive is not booting correctly and most likely it is damaged. There are chances however that the data is OK, but will definitely need to be taken out to fix it. The best thing is to get a new HD for your Mac and start all over with installing the OS. That is if all the other parts are OK.

like the other person said, just boot from an os installer cd and do a clean install,it should completely wipe out any locks. when booted from the cd,go to the utilities folder on the disk and choose disk setup and reformat your hard drive, then do a clean install.

Safaris, quits one's to 6 times a day.

This problem could be related to the application's preferences file becoming corrupted. To test this theory, create a new user (from System Preferences -> Accounts) and log in to that user account. If you can use Safari for an extended period of time without troubles, this is likely the problem. If not, we'll need to look for something else.

One possible help would be to run Disk Utility and choose Repair Permissions on the boot disk.

P.S. Clamshells are the best!

IBook Clamshell Startup problem after Upgrade

Given that the "power ring" no longer lights up, I am wondering if the DC-in board is mis-connected in some way. No light = no power going to logic board, and no power going to charge the battery.

An alternative test would be to borrow a charged battery from another clamshell. If the machine boots, you know that there's something askew with the DC-in board.

BTW, there are excellent take-apart guides for iBooks at iFixit.com
