When I conect a hp 320g ext hard drive to usb port it wont load and I cant find on the computer

Check USB root hub in Device Manager for any malfunction

Pc wont recognize my hp simplesave 2TB external hard drive


No PC stated
No OS stated. (operating system) nor if PC is internet connected.
no Simplesafe model stated, is it the 3.5" HDD? version
id yes it needs power pack to use it. HDD uses huge currents to start up. and spin.
USB ports?
if the drive fails on all PCs, the drive is bad. (or was erased by grimlin's in the night)
plug in the power pack 12vdc is correct.
do not mix it up with other packs or boom.
then listen to the hdd case with you ear, here it spin up?
if not the pack is dead, or the hdd is dead.

the drives can fail and be good.
for many reasons.
  1. bad usb port
  2. usb port driver missing.
  3. OS virus corruptiong
  4. drive fails to spin means no 12vdc power. (bad power pack)
  5. using a laptop and expecting the weak USB ports to start HDD motor, will never happen, on large 3.5" HDD. some cant even start a 2.5"

My maxtor 500gb usb hard drive is not responding when I plug to my pc, so I can't access to any of my file


hello,
-make sure that the cables from the ext hard drive is properly connected like power if there is and USB -try other USB port -try other USB devices -try other USB cable for that Maxtor -try other computer
the reason why you are doing that is to know if the USB port is broken of if the ext hard drive is not responding.

When I plug my 320G WD Elements there is no WD icon on my windows or my computer window. thanks


Have you used this HDD before?, it this is the first time?

Sometimes you have to install the WD Smartware Software. In the case of the 320G, which are the first HDD released, The computer should detect them automatically.

Try with another USB port. Do not use a USB multiport because it won't power the HD.

If it doesn't work on your computer, try it on another one. This way you can discard the possibility that the HDD is damaged.

My external hard drive wont conect to my computer.


Is this a new drive? has it worked before? the usual sequence is to connect the external drive to a power source first, and then connect the usb cables to the PC. IF you know the usb cables are good and have verified that they are connected properly, try connect to a different usb port on the PC, sometimes ports go bad. If that still doesn't work, the most likely the hard drive has gone bad.

use it on a differnet usb port
these portable hard drives have some issues with 1.1 usb ports

Western digital 320g elements portable won't work


Hey,
try connecting it o another computer and check
if not yet, use only the WD USB transfer wire supplied in the box.
because WD External HDD only recongize its own USB and none other.

My drive is not recognized


I've had this problem before.

I tried a different cord and it started working again. Additionally i've had this work for me (see below)

Try This:


  1. Unplug all USB devices
  2. Turn off Ext Hard drive
  3. Shut down computer
  4. Power on ext hard drive (then wait like 1 min)
  5. Turn on computer
  6. Wait for windows to finish loading
  7. Plug in the USB cord from the ext hard drive to your computer (may take up to a minute for computer to recognize it)
  8. If it doesn't recognize it then keep trying it in different USB ports
If it still won't recognize get all the latest windows update and reboot. If that doesn't solve your issue try your external hard drive on some other computers, check to see if drive needs special drivers installed (which most don't).

From SimpleTech's website: "1) I have the drive plugged in but I cannot find the drive in "My Computer", why?
The most likely cause would be not enough power provided by a single USB port on your computer. Unplug the portable drive from the cable and unplug the cable from the computer. Now, plug the cable into 2 USB ports directly on your computer. (If you have a desktop, you should plug the USB cable directly into the USB ports on the back of the computer. If this is a laptop, you should plug directly into a USB ports on the computer. Do not plug into a USB hub or docking station). Then plug the drive into the cable. In a few seconds you should see the drive listed in the "My Computer" window as a SimpleDrivePS."

If all that fails you need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.
