Funai wv20v6 dvd/vcr player recorder

When you insert a vcr tape, it starts to play and then everything including the dvd player shut down and the power shuts off

I have the exact same model and have experienced the same problem for a couple of months now, whenever I insert a VHS tape. The DVD recorder still seemed to function OK, but whenever I attempted to play or record a VHS tape it would play for a few seconds and then shut down all power for the entire unit. When I would push the power button to start up the unit, it would immediately eject the tape. I would then be able to watch TV (I have

Dish receiver channeled through the unit) and play or record DVDs. I now

have encountered a new problem. Just today, the entire unit began shutting down entirely on it's own. Watching TV or watching a DVD it lasts about 15 to 20 seconds then just shuts itself off. I then press the power button and it comes on, only to last another 15 seconds before shutting off again.

I contacted Funai support and they told me that I could try unplugging the unit for 10 or 15 minutes, then try it again. That did seem to temporarily fix

my problem with watching TV or DVDs, but I still have the problem with an inability to watch VHS tapes. Funai support said that it sounds like an internal problem and that I should bring or ship it to a tech repair center.

They also told me that it is too bad that I am out of warranty. So, I guess

that I am SOL unless somebody out there can give me some suggestion on how to remedy the problem with this unit. Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions.

I have researched that there has been numerous issues in this unit beyond warranty period just like this issue and the one I have with the DVD recorder. I am planning to write a letter to the company and need some supporters. If you like to put a response (one line with your name) in this link, I will include them as comments to the CEO of the company. I feel like we are being ripped by this company that sells products with defective and unreliable components.

Me too..!  Never used the VCR for the year it was under warrenty and when I recently tried to play a tape it shut the unit down in about 6 seconds.
I had trouble with the DVD burner working spuratically...and then not burning a disc at all...and giving me an error message for a bad disc.  Wrong.  There was nothing wrong with the disc.  Today I took the case off (6 screws) and blew the unit out with a hair dryer.  I was going to clean the laser reader but had no denatured alcohol...put it back together turned it on...and it burned the disc it had rejected earlier. Maybe it just needed to be dusted...!

I have the same problem with Play,FF, REW. Goes for 5 to 7 seconds and shuts down. Hit power switch and tape ejects. It acts like there is a problem with the end of tape sensor. Does anyone know how the end of tape sensor in this thing works?

Sent E-mail to support and here is their reply!

"Thank you for your inquiry,

It shouldn't do that.. it would need to be looked into.

Have you had this unit within the one year warranty along with the original receipt? We can service this unit if that is the case. Please reply back as soon as you can for further instructions or call our support line at 1-800-242-7158. Remember the receipt will be needed to verify that the unit is still within the one year warranty period.

Seems like no solution...bummer. Funai was no help. Same out of warrenty story and no idea what i was talking about. Tried to blame it on the unit being old. Too bad I didn't use the vcr side sooner!! it would still be under warranty. Well there's 180 bucks down the tubes.

I too am experiencing the same issue as my unit shuts down after a few minutes of use. I will never buy anything from this Funai again. Btw: unplugging it does work but only for a short amount of time and then the problem happens again. Very poor product.

After tape starts to play, why is it ejected and player shuts down?

The tape may be defective in some way such as wrinkled or slack in the cassette. If other tapes are handled the same way, the fault probably is in the player mechanism.

Which brand of DVD-R disc did you use? What error did you get? What is your video source? Most TVs don't give video output. The tuner on the WV20V6 is an NTSC (analog) tuner. Thus you need to use a set-top box (OTA digital-to-analog converter, cable or satellite box) with the recording "channel" set to video input 1 for most channels or analog cable input to the recorder.
Verbatim DVD-R 8x, Maxell DVD-R 8X/16X and JVC DVD-R 2X have been tested and proven to work by the manufacturer. A number of DVD+R and DVD+RW or DVD-RW have been tested as well.
I've found that you have to test each batch of DVDs. Different manufacturing plants can lead to bad discs from a previously good brand.
The manual for the WV20V6 is available from Funai Corp (who manufacture the recorder for SV2000). The direct link is http://www.funai-corp.com/support/om/WV20V6.pdf . See page 25 of the PDF for tested optical discs. No CD-Rs will work.
I hope this helps. Please add a comment with more information about your situation for additional support.

My vcr-dvd comes on for about 7----12 seconds & then makes a rapid clicking sound & shuts off.

I would have a look at the sledge that the Lazer sits on to see if there is any plastic bits broken around where it is or itself. That might explain the clicking noise.

Have a Magnavox MWR20V6 - have a few things going on, one the power shutting off automatically when i put the vcr on timer and therefore does not record, and 2 vhs tapes that are almost new, gets stuck

Junk it. It's identical to Funai WV20V6. I can't remember exactly what is causing the shutdown. But, I do remember that it says it can't be fixed. Read other posts here at Fixya.

Arakawastore. As usual you'll need to register a username and password to logon with if you want to actually download the service manual. But you can see everything you want to know about it by clicking on the hotlink below without having to register beforehand.

If you're hoping to find it online for free all you'll do is waste vast amounts of time. If I had it in my PDF service library I'd gladly have provided you with it, just as I've done on numerous occasions before here on Fixya.

Not once has a single Fixya member ever bothered to acknowledge my having done so as you can tell by my huge 3 point ranking. Perhaps this best accounts for why we all still have to pay for them.

I can't play any VCR tapes or DVD's in my Magnavox. Shows E1

It may be a timer setting after a power problem. On page 90 of the manual there are setups for the timers My VCR won't do things without the time set either. The manual may be downloaded here.

http://www.funai-corp.com/6pdf/om/MWR20V6.pdf

Basically get into the setups and set the time and hit enter. I hope this works.
