Question about Microwave Ovens

2 Answers

I have a built-in hood with VIV600 interior blower made by Viking Range corp. that had been working well since 2003. However, a few weeks ago, the blower stopped working. the lights are OK and we could still hear some noise when turning on the Fan/blower, but it's just not sucking any smog out. Can anyone provide suggestions on what to do?

Did you mean visually checking out the parts? Do I need to turn the electricity off? How do I know which part is damaged? thanks.

This suggestion has not solved my problem yet, but it points me to the right direction. I will check the problem again myself and get a professional help if the motor did burn out. thanks.

If you use this unit alot the fan motor is probably gone. If you can use tools, power the unit down and disassemble it to get to the fan motor. Check the motor for excessive play end to end and side to side. It should not move. If it does it has probably worn the bushings to the point that the stator and rotor are touching causing the motor to drag and not reach full speed. If that is the case I would get the information off the unit and go to www.repairclinic.com to find a new motor and install it. This should solve your problem. Let me know how you make out or if you need any more help.

My diagnosis points to the fan motor being bad. As I stated if you are not comfortable disassembling the unit you should hire a competent technician but with a screwdriver and a little work it should not be that hard to replace the motor. Typically it is located near the rear with a couple of screws after the cover is removed. www.repairclinic.com should be able to supply the parts.Let me know how you make out or if you need any more help.

Yes they do.

If you had listed the model number, we would likely have been able to point you to the appropriate Sharp service manual.

Sears Canada bought Eatons Canada back in 2002. Eatons sold Viking products. I bought I Sears Viking over the range Viking microwave built in 2002. Nomeclature # 851.8250800 Model # 82508 Ser#...

This is a Sanyo microwave. the "851" number is the manufacturer number or "source" number. I can't tell you any more about that particular model.
I would remove the circuit board (control panel) and check for damaged/burnt copper print. Where the copper is burnt, you can solder on jumper wires to complete the circuit.

A few weeks ago our ge JVM1660 quit heating and ge sent me a replacement magnetron. I've heard that the capacitor will discharge after the unit has been unplugged for 24 hours... Mine has been unplugged...

Hi newer microwave ovens have a built in resistor to bleed the power from the capacitor once it is unplugged. Saying this it is always a good safety practice to discharge it.

The factory approved method is to purchase a 2 Watt, 20,000 ohm resistor and touch it across the terminals on the microwave capacitor to discharge, doing this with a tool like pliers so you are not touching the metal tips of the resistor.

Most technicians will use pliers that have insulated handles and touch the tips to the capacitor. I am not condoning that, just letting you know.

Whirlpool MH2175XS microwave/hood combo with oil leak, etc.

This is a very wierd problem that we have been dealing with for years, and never seem to get a correct answer. Have actually seen green slime like oil inside the units before. From what we have heard, is that this oily substance is actually coming out of the blower fan assembly inside the unit. Its like bearing oil from the center support shaft. Will go away over time, but the fan may or may not go bad. Good luck with the mystery oil.

Does stove-top need downdraft if microwave has oven-hood combo?

We have a stove with no downdraft, and a microwave with a hood above it. It works just fine. I expect you could keep your downdraft and put a microwave without a hood above it, and that would also work. I don't think, however, you can buy an above the range mocrowave oven, that slides in on brackets, which will not have a hood.
