Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook
Power lights are showing on but does not boot up hard drive and
As was suspected, acer confirmed that this is a problem with the motherboard, and with them it will cost $449 to fix. it can be either that or the lcd screen but if your symptoms are identical to mine, then most likely, like me, you are sol. best of luck to all of you, if you find a cheaper alternative than i'm sure others would be very happy to hear.

SOURCE: ACER ASPIRE 5100 WONT BOOT
Try taking all of your ram chips out and re-seeting them. I upgraded to 4 gigabytes in my 5100 and it wouldn't boot, just a black screen with some cdrom and hd activity. Or try running with just one ram chip and then going into the bios and setting everything to default. this made my system bootable again.

If it works on another computer then either the ide cable in the acer is bad/loose at either end or the ide controller on the motherboard is bad. I would try a known good ide cable first as if this is the problem it is fixable alot cheaper than a motherboard. Hope this helps.
