I was experiencing the same problem with the drive not being recognized. I wasn't sliding the sleeve back far enough for it to get a good connection. Once I did it worked fine.

Do the computers that you tried it on make a sound or give any indication that a new device has been plugged in? If not then it could just be broken. It's not uncommon for these devices to fail altogether and they have a shelf life of about 10 years (depending on how much abuse they get of course!).
