I have installed all of the latest service packs from Windows. MacCaffee is new but I was having this issue before that anti-virus was installed. That is why I installed it to eliminate any virises. The first full scan pulled out over 40 viruses.

This is due to data on the hdd is having issues(crosslinked). Run the scandisk and defrag will resolve your problem. Also run chkdsk /f command in command line.
Eg. chkdsk /f c:

If you run the scandisk and defragmantation once in a week, system performance.will improve.

Revert back for more assistance.

Hi,

Update your Windows with the latest service packs from Microsoft. Search google with XP SP1 SP2 and SP3 and the first link is the one (usually) to be followed.

By the way, you should not unplug your computer like this; a hardware damage may result. But I understand this is the only way sometimes to bring it out of halt state.

Also make sure that your PC is on a stable surface and all the hardware is seated properly.

I have experienced this issue and in most cases the antivirus program is the culprit. Try removing Mcaffee and see if it runs properly without it.

Also, Vista and recently Win 7 are more stable. OR you can switch to Ubuntu as a free alternative if you don't play PC games.

You should always use an antivirus software as there are tons of viruses on the internet. There are many free AV softwares like AVG but I guess that you have already purchased McAfee.

It appears that an important Windows file is corrupt. If you have access to a Windows CD, you can attempt a repair install. Just choose the Upgrade option. Also update drivers to their latest version.

If you don't have access to Windows CD ten you can try a system restore. Open Help and Support and type in System Restore. Choose a restore point when you didn't have this problem. Note that you can only restore your system if automatic restore is on.
