Oil System Plugged.

  1. Remove the clutch cover, bar, and chain, clean the bar groove, any holes and passages on the rear of the bar (both sides, consider rotating the bar), if equipped with a sprocket nose ensure it rotates easily at least one complete revolution. Clean the saw oiler hole and channel. Insert a blunted, hooked piece of wire through the oil filler hole and pull the hose in the oil tank out. Pay attention to the screen or filter on the free end (clean or replace, difficult to determine serviceability). Start the saw and see if it oils when revved up. If yes reassemble your saw. If no, continue with 2.
  2. Work your way through the linkage cleaning and replacing any defective parts as you go. Carefully check the hoses for cracks especially at bends and connections. If equipped with an oil pump it is usually behind the clutch (clutch is a left handed thread). Please make extensive notes & some digital pictures will help during reassembly.
If it does not oil on completion of 1 it is most likely a bad oiler or worm gear. Please see the IPL to aid in oiler component identification.

Poulan pp295 Gas Saw Type 1 (may not be your saw)
http://www.ordertree.com/modelinfo/PWE/PP295-Gas-Saw-Type-1/75.PP295-Gas-Saw-Type-1.1.59.1.html

It has an outboard clutch, use this as guide if removal is necessary:
R² Drive Link Outboard Clutch by Drivelink.blogspot.com

  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed. Poulan (Craftsman, Jonsered, Husky) clutch removal tool part number 530031112 if needed, is under $5 from many sources (look at the visible area between the weights if 2 small round sockets are visible you need the tool).
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
If not a Type 1 your saw can be found here:

The dash number of your serial number is the type.

What is the file size (to sharpen chain) for a Poulan Pro 295 46cc?

I am pretty sure this machine ran a .325 pitch chain, so the file size is 3/16, if it is running 3/8 low profile chain ( 91 ) it will be a 5/32 file, the pitch should be marked on the bar .

I have a Poulan 295. I needed to replace the chain. It is a 20" chain. There is bar oil in the resevoir. The chain will not stay on the bar (it seems loose even when fully tightened). I replaced...

If you replaced the bar AND the chain, you'll need to make sure the chain is the correct chain for the particular bar you've used. If you're only replacing the chain, you need to make sure the chain has the same # of drive links as your old chain (maybe one or two more, if you've had some removed because of chain stretch).

On that particular model, for a 20" chain, you could have a 78 OR 80 drive link chain (drive links being the part of the chain that rides in the groove of the bar). The correct drive link count is determined by the bar you've installed and should have been made clear by whoever you purchased the bar from. Some brands use an 80 drive link chain, but MOST use the 78 drive link chain.

If the bar you purchased uses the 78 drive link chain, but you have an 80 drive link chain, then no matter how far out you adjust the bar, you may not get the chain tight enough. PartsBuggy shows a listing of which bars use the 78 drive link chains here.

Poulan pro 295 no oil to chain

On the left side of the saw, there are two black round taps. One for oil, one for fuel. Most likely the front tap, is your oil filler. Check and refill. If already done it, then you need to dismantle your blade and clean the area around the axle of the engine to get a clean oil exit.

What is the correct gas/oil mix for the Poulan Pro 295 chainsaw?

50:1 according to this:

I suspect the manual says 40:1, but if properly adjusted it will operate better on 50:1.
I gallon of premium fuel to 2.6 ounces of quality 2-cycle oil = 50:1.
I gallon of premium fuel to 3.2 ounces of quality 2-cycle oil = 40:1.

How to install/remove feul pump on a Poulan 295 pro, is it from the Tank side, or the worm screw side? I am familiar with the saw, just not this part of it, and I am fearful of just trying to pry it out...

Are you referring to the oil pump? If so start by removing the clutch and drum. Then there are 2 philips screws that hold on the oil pump. The gear is plactic and wears from the slightest bit of dirt. The entire oil pump assembly is inexpensive and should be replaced.

POULAN PRO 295: RUNNING VERY STRONG, FOR OVER AN

Remove the air filter, squirt a little fuel into the carb. Start and let run if it will for a few minutes. Could be you had some water in old fuel. and it is still in the intake of saw. If it still will not run after squirting some fuel into carb. You have a firing problem.
