This is a new CLX-3160 just out of the box (though it has been in storage for 12 plus months). Upon booting it gives me a "install [color] toner" message for all colors though they have been installed properly and are ready to go. Any ideas of where I should look. There are 4 connectors behind each cartridge, one on the back of the image module and another along the top edge towards the front. I don't know what sensor might be responsible for sending that information to the CPU. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Your problem is the black toner cartridge pickup drum has become scratched and is depositing "extra" black toner onto the paper prior to the fuser roller. you need to replace the drum and all should be ok then
The waste toner tank may be full. Please open the front cover( where the toner bottles are located). You will find a transparent "L " shaped box is the waste toner tank. You may pull it out and replace it.
When this happened, I took the tank out and shook it out into a garbage can (do this outside and be very careful not to breathe the dust). I then took a shop vac and held the hose at the opening while blowing compressed air into the tank. Wiggle the air nozzle around and you'll get out 99% of the toner. Pay extra attention to the sensor optics (plastic bulges on the sides of the tank). These need to be clean since the printer knows when the tank is full because the toner blocks light shining from one side of the tank to the other
Reinstall the tank and be sure it is fully inserted. If they printer is still on, turn it OFF. Close the front door of the machine and turn it back on.
I have a CLX-2160N and have just emptied my own waste toner container. (Disclaimer: not sure how toxic or environmentally friendly this is). Emptied carefully and thoroughly (fine dust). Immersed in bowl of warm soapy water, and vigorous shaking to get nice and clean. Shook all water out well, and dried off as much as possible. Reinstalled. Turned printer back on. Hey presto - seems happy.
You can buy toner cartridges to this machine and fix the problem yourselves. Go to any office supply store and they will have toner cartridges for the Samsung clx 3160. The display will flash the name fo the cartridge color that needs to be replaced. Just open the front door of the machine, pull out the empty cartridges and pop in the new ones.
This is a very common problem with Samsung CLX-3160 and CLP-300 printers. The real problem is that the developer blades get dirty with the toner. Buying a new imaging unit will only fix the problem for a short period of time then it starts to get buildup on the developer blades. You need to clean the developer blades. If there are streaking on any color, then also needs to be cleaned.
To clean the developer blades, look to this link. http://losingambition.com/clp300imagefix/ It describes how to clean them. It only takes a few minutes to do once you get the developers out of the unit. Just be careful when you clean the edge of the blades. You need to make sure that the residue is completely removed from the edge. Also be sure that when you reinstall the blade that the little foam does not get trapped below the blade. Otherwise when you print the side where the blade is not properly installed will have too much color.
If you are afraid of messing your printer up, then you need to buy a new imaging unit. They go around $100.
