Question about Computers & Internet

Need to remove the "top cover" of my Compaq Presario 12XL400 (actually a 12XL426)to get to the power on micro switch. I can remove the palmrest, keyboard, heat sink, cd-rom, 2 hinge covers - but I can't get the U shaped top cover to come free. Any ideas??? - would love a link to a "service manual" Thank You, Doug

Thanks. There are a lot of tabs - but sequencing isn't the only issue.

Is it necessary to remove the LCD before I can remove the top cover?

    This is a laptop - Compaq Presario 12XL400 (actually a 12XL426) from about 2001.

This unit has a hinge cover on the left and right hinge - and a center cover that may conceal a center hinge.

It is the center cover that seems to be concealing screws that would release the top cover - and I cannot even tell if the center cover is part of the top cover or is removeable.

    Thanks Again,

Hmmm...I'm still unclear. I don't want or need to disassemble the LCD. I may want to remove it - so I can get the top cover of the laptop off. The top cover I am referring to is a large plastic thin U shaped molded piece (about 13 inches across the U with two 6 inch legs of thin molded plastic making up the legs of the U.

I need to remove the laptop top cover so that I can replace/repair the power-on microswitch.

Thanks for giving this you good thinking.

That has a load of screws or tabs alongside the chassis, that you need to press(tabs) in sequence. be gentle, as those can snap off mighty easily.

is this a desktop or a laptop?

  • Patrick Michaels
Patrick Michaels Feb 19, 2008 that I'm clear on's not that hard..there is a little panel above the keyboard that comes out, and reveals the screws holding the lcd in place. keyboard MUST come out first though, to release the connector for lcd.

then, there will be 2 or 4 screws in back or bottom of laptop, holding lcd to main part. remove those, set them aside safe.

then, with a very gentle touch, and a super thin blade, starting at the place at the bottom(closest to you on the lcd) start the process of easing the bezel from the lcd. you may need to remove some bumpers from the front of the lcd, and remove some screws under them.

then, there are a series of screws along the sides of the lcd..take them out..

    and then you are there.

hope this is enough to close this account

got it..those screws are under the unit, and need to be removed from the bottom. some of them may be an odd size, so keep them separate, ok?

Compaq Presario s3310cl starts when hooking in power plug and will not shutoff using power button. Just started doing this today. Someone said to unhook everything and hold power button in for 20 seconds...

The On/Off switch is mounted inside of the Case Front Bezel. It is
very unlikely that it is broken. The problem is the front bezel
plastic switch (which is not really the switch) is more like a cap or a
knob that comes in contact with the actual switch is somehow broken.
You can remove the front bezel to see I am talking about.
Manually push On/push Off on the actual switch and your system will turn
On and Off like it should.

I have a hp-compaq presario c300 and i forgot my power- on password. i need help! or need backdoor password in order to fix. please!

NEVER install a power on password without making a note somewhere as to that password is - there is no fix appart from replace the m/board as the POPW is within the cmos chipset - there is a rest button on the m/board but I do not think it will clear this problem. It is located under the top cover just below the mouse input port - requires removing the top cover - screen keyboard ect.

How do you remove the actuall keyboard on a compaq presario 1200 notebook computer, i have removed all screws and access doors on bottom end, along with the memory etc.

First remove the top plastic strip piece (where the power button is located) and then use a phillips screwdriver and unscrew the screws holding the keyboard in place. Gently pry it out and then remove the ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the mainboard

Power switch will not power comnputer - does anyone know exactly what I need to fix this problem and where to order.

Presario power switch assemblies are only made for and sold by HP. If the manufacturer will sell you one (which I doubt) you will need to contact them at

There is nothing unique about a power switch, any momentary on contact will work. Have you tried shorting the two pins to see if it is actually a switch problem?

I can't remove cover to Compaq Presario to add memory.

Turn the computer around so you are looking at the back. There is a white plastic latch on the right side near the top. Press the latch down and slide the right side (actually the machine's left, but you're looking at it from behind, remember?) panel back toward you. Then you can lift it off the machine. There may be a screw in the top of the panel above the latch, so check for that if the panel won't slide. Compaq doesn't put that screw in at the factory, but someone else may have. Once the side cover is off you will have clear access to the system board.

Compaq Presario 1000

I have a Presario X1050, not sure if they are similar. Remove the screws from the bottom, carefully remove the keyboard with a small flat head screwdriver. You'll find many screws hidden by small plastic covers and rubber feet that will all need to be removed with the screwdriver. You may have to remove the display to get inside the laptop. Ultimately though, the power supply is actually external included on the power cable.

Replace CD-Rom Drive

solution: open front blue magnetic case door, look on either side of the power button, there are finger holes in the other blue cover.
lift out from bottom to top. this cover comes off, not the whole
case. inside find tabs next to cd drive, squeeze and pull out. note: the side sliders were they come out, they will come off the
cd drive when removed. it is easier to replace the top drive by removing the bottom drive, put in the top half way, then put bottom back in half way and slide them in together.

voice of experience. hope this helps

Compaq Presario 700 PC Notebook keyboard locking out

Check that your notebook power settings are correct, it may be that when you press off or shutdown it's actually going into hibernation or standby, this is only correct when you close the lid without shutting down through Windows. As for Windows Media Player, you cannot remove it as it's a Windows component, you can only dissable it through Add/Remove programmes>Add/Remove Windows Components.
