Netgear MR814 and windows 7 issues

New PC w/ Windows 7... When the PC is directly connected to cable modem, the network functions as expected. However, when the MR814 is between the cable modem and the PC, the internet crawls. Can the MR814 be upgraded to function with Windows 7? Also, why is Windows 7 a problem? What is happening to need to have a switch upgraded?

There shouldn't be any issues with the router as a result of Windows 7. The Router does not interact with the computer in such a way as to cause incompatibility like with hardware or software.
That said, what could be causing issues may be out of date WiFi card drivers. Windows 7 has an incredible driver database and I have only come across a handful of things it doesn't detect. But sometimes even with the things it does pick up, a better driver is available.

You should run Windows Update by going to Start (Netgear MR814 and windows 7 issues - 2252758.gif), All Programs, and then Windows Update. If not already set up, you should click change settings on the left and make sure all recommended updates are received like important updates. This way you will get all updates available, including hardware updates.

If this does not seem to improve the situation I will be posting a How To on properly configuring your Netgear router. This will ensure your settings are set to their most optimal settings.

Good Luck,

How to resolve "Limited Or No Connectivity Errors" in Windows

When attempting to set up or make network connections on a Windows computer, you may encounter a Limited Or No Connectivity error message similar to the following:
Limited or no connectivity: The connection has limited or no connectivity. You might be unable to access the Internet or some network resources.

This message can result from any of several different technical glitches or configuration problems. Follow these steps to resolve Limited Or No Connectivity errors in Windows.
1. Determine whether your network access is functioning properly (that you can reach local network resources and the Internet). If you are using a broadband Internet and Windows XP Service Pack 2, this message is often a false error report. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article 892896 for details on how to work around this error appropriately.
2. If your network access is non-functional. continue to the following steps.
3. If your computer connects to the network through a broadband router , resetting (powering off and on) the router may resolve the issue. If not using a broadband router, or if resetting your router only temporarily resolves the issue and the error message re-appears later, continue to the following steps.
If connecting to your network using Wi-Fi and using wireless security, your WEP or other security key may not be set properly. Check the wireless security configuration on your computer's network adapter and update if it necessary.
4. If connecting to your network using an Ethernet cable, your cable may have failed. Temporarily replace your network cable with a new one to determine whether this resolves the issue.
5. If using a broadband router and DHCP on your network, check your computer's IP address to verify it is valid and not a private address that starts with 169.254. An invalid address of the form 169.254.x.x signifies your computer's inability to obtain a usable IP address from your router.
To resolve DHCP configuration problems, proceed to the following steps.
6. Reboot your computer, router (if present) and broadband modem together, then re-test your connection.
7. If your connection remains non-functional, run the Windows Network Repair utility on your computer.
8. If your connection remains non-functional, update your router settings to change from dynamic to static IP address configuration, and set an IP address on the computer appropriately.
9. If your connection remains non-functional, unplug your router and connect the computer directly to your broadband modem. If this configuration is functional, contact the manufacturer of your router for additional support.
10. If your computer is connecting to your network directly through a broadband modem, or if your Internet access remains non-functional after following the instructions above, contact your Internet provider for support.

Just installed win 7 and can't get internet on

Can't connect to the Internet using Windows 7 OS.
1. If you haven't already done so, run the Network troubleshooter to see if it can help diagnose and solve your problem.
Open the Network troubleshooter by right-clicking the network icon in the notification area, and then clicking Troubleshoot problems.
2. Make sure that all cables are connected (for example, make sure your modem is connected to a working phone jack or cable connection, either directly or through a router).
3. Restart your modem, and then restart your router. Remove the power cable from the modem and router. After all lights on the device have gone out, wait at least 10 seconds, and then plug the modem and router back in. Some modems have a battery backup that prevents the lights from going out. For this type of modem, press and quickly release the Reset button.
4. Check your router. Because of the new networking features in Windows Vista andWindows 7, some older network routers are not fully compatible with these versions of Windows and can cause problems. You can test your router to see whether it is fully compatible with Windows 7 by running the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool. Or, for a list of routers that are compatible with Windows Vista, go to the WindowsCompatibility Center website.

Hook directly to the router hard wire. Go to configuration page for router and look at wireless security settings. it will show you Wep or some other encryption technique. It will also give you a place to view or change your wireless key. Once you do that write the key down and then connect wirelessly.
