Question about Kenmore 24032\24036 Top Load Washer

I have an older Kenmore Elite top load washer-won't spin

I have an older Kenmore Elite top load washer 20942991 / Serial no. CJ4003045 / Type 111 The washer will not spin or agitate. I fixed this same problem some years ago but cannot remember the details. I replaced a white plastic disc (?) with little knobs that had been sheared off. I bought it locally. This may be the same situation. I have not taken the unit apart yet to confirm. I need a part number and maybe additional causes. Thanks for your help

First, see the Sears Parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getModel!retrieve.pd?modelNumber=110.20942991+

The part that you're describing is the Motor coupler. A common part available at most appliance repair stores.

Another possibility is the Lid Switch (again, readily available).

See the following for how to access and replace the motor coupler.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=135

To verify that it isn't the Lid Switch, try to by-pass it.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part.

Both the Motor coupler and Lid Switch are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace.

It is called a coupler, any appliance part store has them,it is a common problem,if the washer drains water, then that rules out the lid switch, you have to flip up head head to remove the cabinet to get to the motor,it's pretty easy once you get in there-mike

CHECK THE LID SWITCH THE PART THAT PUSHES THE SWITCH DOWN MAY BE WORN ENOUGH TO CAUSE THIS PROBLEM. WITH THE LID OPEN START THE WASHER IN THE SPIN CYCLE AND PUSH THE SWITCH WITH A POPSICKEL STICK AND SEE IF THIS PROBLEM STILL HAPPENS

Type 111 filled with water and stopped

with the machine off, turn the cycle dial around 3x very harshly, then try it again. If it works normally now, you'll need a new cycle switch soon!
