Question about Dell 5110cn Laser Printer

3 Answers

Dell 5110cn - I have just changed my black ink cartridge. The side of the paper I am printing on is fine but on the reverse side there is a smudge all the way down the centre of the page. I have used the ink cartridge for a while now and the problem is still persisting. Thanks John

Firstly, sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I didn't realise anybody had replied.

I am pretty sure it is a proper Dell cartridge, it certainly came in the correct box. I didn't buy it directly from Dell but I did buy another cartridge from the same person and that worked fine and I definitely paid for a proper Dell cartridge. Note to save on postage costs I did buy it about 9 months before using it, because I bought two cartridges at the same time.

It is quite possible that the printer head needs cleaning but I actually don't know how to do this on the laser printer. I can't find anywhere in the manual where it mentions head cleaning.

    Hope that clarifies the situation.

    Hello Joe,

How actually would I get to the platen, I have opened up the printer
but it is not that obvious? I was wondering if it might be better to just
get the printer professionally cleaned (I have had it since late 2006)?
Do you have any idea how much it would usually cost? Or is cleaning
the Platen really quite an easy task?

    Hello Homedesigner,

That was a useful little wizard I didn't know about it. Unfortunately
when I followed it through to the end it just suggested that I contact
Dell Technical Support the problem of course is that my warranty has
expired. However, with your comments and Joe's earlier, it looks likely
that there must be some ink inside the printer which is causing this
problem. Actually it makes sense since it started after installing a new
toner cartridge, probably some ink has leaked from either the old or
new cartridge during the installation cartridge.

I think I have decided that I will need to get it professionally cleaned
so it is now just a case of trying to find somebody to do it.

Unless of course doing a cleaning job is easier than I think?

Go to this link at Dell and go through the print troubleshooting steps listed. The site will tell you how to enter diagnostic mode and will most likely help solve your issue. I have a 5100cn which is very similar, but older and this site has helped me several times.

Take a look at the maintenance manual and with a vacuum cleaner, remove the drum assembly, the fuser and any other interior items that can be removed. Make sure the drum is kept in a dark place (preferably a thick black plastic bag). Carefully vacuum all the areas out and reassemble. That should take care of your problem.

Hi John. that ink is actually on the platen [that is the roller that the paper comes into contact with. Carefully clean that platen with rubbing alcohol and paper towels or rags and your smudge will be gone. regards, Joe

My dcp165c printer print quality prints black & yellow colour. i clean print head through maintance 76 but problem cannot be solved

How is the printer printing black and yellow color? Is it a smudge?

When I print, the pages are smudged with ink. What should I do?
- If smudged stains appear at the top center of the printed page:
  • Make sure the paper is not too thick or curled.
Also, verify that the appropriate paper is being used and that the paper type set in the machine matches the media used.
  • Make sure the paper is not curled when you print on the back side of the paper with the Print Odd Pages and Print Even Pages settings.

- If smudged stains appear at the right or left corner of the printed page:
  • Make sure the paper is not curled when you print on the back side of the paper with the Print Odd Pages and Print Even Pages settings.

- If smudged stains appear on the reverse side or at the bottom of the page:
NOTE: Illustrations shown below are from the representative product and may differ from your Brother machine.
  • Make sure the printer platen is not dirty with ink.

How to clean the machine's printer platen

    1. Unplug the machine from the AC power outlet.
    2. Lift the scanner cover until it locks securely in the open position.
    3. Clean the machine's printer platen(1) and the area around it, wiping off any scattered ink with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

    4. Close the scanner cover.

  • Make sure you are using Genuine Brother Innobella™ Ink.
    > Brother Genuine Supplies information

  • Make sure you are using the paper support flap.

To use the paper support flap, pull out the paper support (1) until it clicks and unfold the paper support flap(2).

Cannon Pixma MP500- I get a solid black line on the reverse side of a printed page. Went through all the cleaning procedures and new cartridge, no change.

For some reason, the printer is designed to dump ink into the bottom of the tray before feeding on the paper. The paper is then dragged over the ink, leaving the black line. This is a software issue, not a hardware one. I'd advise that you update all of your print drivers, as well as your firmware.

A temporary fix is to clean the rollers and base plate of the printer for ink spills.

Check for any bits of paper or debris that may be caught in the printer. Be careful to feed in the paper perfectly straight, as this printer does not have good rollers, and it will cause paper to break off and cause problems. If any debris has caught or absorbed ink, it will cause the back of the paper to smudge, and you have black lines.

Print is Smudged

you may try
1) clean the cartridge nozzles with dry soft paper
2) clean the cartridge carriage down side surface there might be bled ink.
3) check the cartridge up side there is the lable cover the ink refill hole is ok, no any lable stick there you need put stick lable there.

Black smudges on printed page

Are you sure this is a Designjet 450 (large format printer) and not a Deskjet 450 (portable printer)? The following assumes you have wispy black streaking on the printed side of the paper. If the streaking is on the back side then post more details of the printer model and the issue.

In either case the most likely cause is a buildup of fibers on the underside of the printheads or carriage, causing wisps of black ink to be dragged on the paper when the carriage reverses direction. You can clean the printer as shown at the following (though the details will be somewhat different for the Designjet or Deskjet....).
