Has your cable provider "provisioned" the new modem. Some cable providers require you to call them and let them know you have a new modem. The cable provider then registers the modem's MAC address with its servers so that it is seen as a legitimate connection (this is done to prevent someone tapping into your cable to get free interenet).

If your modem has been provisioned, then try disconnecting all other connections to the cable service to see if the noise problem goes away ( you can log into your modem 192.168.100.1 and look at the signal, the critical item you're looking at is the signal to noise ratio - it should be above 30). Add back the connections one at a time to see what it changing the SNR. Also, if you have a lot of splitters or even have an amplifier in line with your cable and the modem, this could be causing problems if it is not the type that allows return signals or is not in the proper frequency range. A noise filter will not fix these problems, the noise source itself must be eliminated.

I think its the modem that you need to upgrade. Comcast is already running on DOCSIS 3.0 system. The SB5120 modem that you have is a DOCSIS 2.0 modem. You may need to have your modem replaced with a DOCSIS 3.0 modem like the Motorola SB6120.

Have you rebooted your modem after hooking it up? Each time you move your connection from your modem, it must be rebooted to issue new information specific to your equipment. Also, make sure you haven't pushed the "Standby" button on the top.
