when you first start your computer and the screen is black a prompt will in the upper screen will tell you to hit f1 or f2 to enter setup. If you miss it or dont see it let windows finish loading then restart your computer and hit f1 and f2 several times right away and it should enter the setup or cmos page.

Cannot get the computer to boot up

it may be a missing or crupted start file, your best bet it to perform a hdd recovery by turning your computer on then when the loading screen appears and gives the option of hitting f1 f2 f3 and so on, you need to hit f8 and follow the steps on the screen. hoped this helped

When I turn the power on the computer beeps twice and I get a message saying that there is no secondary drive and it gives me the options of pressing f1 to start windows or f2 to go to setup.

Press F2 to go to setup. See if there is a listing of drives anywhere. It should say something like "fixed disk 0", "fixed disk 1", or "PATA drive" "SATA drive". Use the arrow keys to select the secondary drive (probably drive 1) and hit enter; change it to "none" or something similar. Then save the settings and reboot. That should take care of that message.

Hi Rose, I'm Fred, and I am a Dell tech. :).
External drives are tricky because the computer may not be able to access them to boot from. Your best option is search for a replacement to the optical (cdrom) drive. Since you are buying one, try to get a dvd burner or dvd reader or cdrom burner. They are usually only a few dollars more, and come in handy down the road. Now, if you cannot get this computer repaired for less than 70 bucks, scrap it. the gx60 is a high-end pentium 3, and not worth much additional money. You can purchase a perfectly good used dell pentium 4 from gearxs for about 80 bucks, with windows XP, and all the basics installed, shipped to your house. the gx60 is not worth a heavy investment, unless you just happen to have the parts and the time.

Secondary drive 0 not found

Hi there.
Sounds like the boot order has been changed in the bios.
The secondary drive sounds like the CD drive as most laptops only come with 1 HDD installed.
Change the boot order to the primary drive by Pressing F1 during startup when the ThinkPad logo is displayed..
Once in the bios change the boot order, save and exit, the computer will restart and boot from the hard drive, when you get into windows check to make sure that the CD rom recognizes CD/DVD's.
Please post back if you need any more help.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Setting custom white-balance

F1 or 4 are white balance memories, rather than buttons to set the WB.
Menu > Custom WB > Right Arrow > Select F1 or F4 >
Then put your piece of white card in front of the lense and hit the shutter button. Make sure you haev enough light though !

THE LAPTOP WILL NOT RECOGNISE THAT THE CD DRIVE IS INSTALLED

First, I'm assuming you have a Windows operating system. When you first turn on the laptop hit the F1 key (on most computers - her's may be otherwise) to enter the setup mode. You have to do it quickly or the machine will roll right into the operating system start-up screen. Follow the setup instructions until you get to the point where you're at "Secondary Master" for EIDE drive devices. This is GENERALLY where the CD drive is "stationed" in the overall drive device hierarchy. Set the "Secondary Master" for "Auto detect" and then "save and exit" (usually F10). Good luck.

Check your Hardware configuration.  This usually happens when you tell the system BIOS that you have for example, a second floppy or Hard Drive, when you do not.  So it stops and asks you what to do next.

Hope that helps.
