I suspected something of this nature. The batteries have degraded over the years of not being used. They probably weren't in very good condition when you quit using it as it is quite a few years old.
The fact that it no longer lights up when you plug it in indicates that the circuit board is also bad. Bad batteries will eventually cause this.
You will need a new circuit board. These come with the batteries attached. Not a cheap fix but I would suggest repairing it if you had been satisfied with it before as this is a good model. You will find this part at shaveroutlet.com. See link below

To install this part, you will need to open the shaver. You will find two round screw covers on the bottom. Pry them out with the edge of a razor blade then remove screws. Once removed, the shaver's outer case will slide off the bottom. You may need to reposition the travel lock to slide the whole outer case off. On the inner case, you will then find a black plastic back. It unsnaps and comes off. You will then see the circuit board and can simply lift it out. Put the new one in just like the old one came out. The new board may have rubberized material over the contacts that you will need to remove. Reassemble everything in reverse order.
