Question about Amana ARB1905C Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

My evaporator fan is not working even though I have power to the fan from the harness. The fan works when tested running power straight to it on the bench, and the leads have continuity to the fan motor, but when plugged up no power shows on the leads. Any advice?

Thanks, I didn't realize until after I posted I was in an Amana forum. I actually have a 1996 42" kitchenaid side by side, I don't think it had the door switch to the fans and the defrost thermostat seems to be working as it did go into the defrost mode recently. I forgot to mention we had a power outage from the storm yesterday, when it came back on could a surge or low voltage have fried anything else?

Good day,
One possibility is the door has a fan switch on it, and would not run if the door was open, or the switch was bad. Some models had a switch in the freezer on the top or side of the housing where the door mates to it.
As well some had 2 fan switches. The one described as well as an other one in the food compartment as well.
In either door, the switch may be a combination switch with 4 wires connected to it. 2 for the light, 2 for the fan.

In addition, many Amana's had the power to the fan routed thru the defrost thermostat. It's a round disk clipped to the top of the coil with 2 wires coming out of it. It's about 1" in diameter.
The purpose of wiring it that way, was so the fan wouldn't start running after a defrost cycle until the coil reached 20 degrees or colder.

    Good day,
    Yes, Kitchenaid is totally different.
If your sure the fan motor is running O.K. when you hard wire it, then it has to be the source.
Power outages can do nothing up to major problems. There is no specific diagnoses to this issue.
This fan motor shares the same power source when it is on, with the compressor and condenser cooling fan motor. If these are working O.K. then it will involve tracing the wiring back to the source.
I'm not sure if it uses a solid state circuit board, so if you want to supply the complete model number, I can
    check it for you.
Power outages/spikes tend to ruin induction loads such as motors and boards. Not wiring.

I want to see if my radiator fans are operational so I want to wire it directly to the battery. The problem is do I wire both negative and positive?

Wish you had stated make/model here.
Before 'hotwiring' fans - test to see if power is actually going to fan(s) - on most cars with two fans - one is ran from engine temp sensor, while the other is run from the A/C system (and for example on Nissan Maxima will not run unless A/C is actually on).
To test get a simple test light - with car at temp test the positive to negative connection at the wire harness connector (should be near fan). Also, test positive to a good ground point. This way you know if power is going to fans.
To 'hotwire' an individual fan - unplug fan from harness - using same grade of wire (2 wires one from positive side of battery to positive input of fan harness, 2nd wire from negative side of connector to a known good ground). - fan should run at that point - if it doesn't and power to harness, replace fan.

Evaporator fan not running

Hello Richard Black - From what you have described it sounds like the refrigerator is experiencing a wiring failure or has a faulty control board. I suggest contacting a professional to accurately pinpoint any potentially more serious issues.

I would look for a fuse somewhere. If you've found the board, simply smell the board. One of the few good things about an electrical short (creating the smell), is that the smell sticks with the problem.

When checking the power to the motor, consider that there is typically a temp sensor that tells it when to kick on and off. If the entire system isn't running, it likely won't ever get to that point, thus no power reading.

Follow the smell.

Also, the good thing about motors is that you can hook up just about any power to it (within reason), and "bump test" it. You'll just bump the power to it, to see if the fan bumps on. Not something you'll want to do for an extended period of time, but it'll serve its purpose.

the defrost heater or thermostat circuitry is bad,you need to test both components, also the defrost timer control if the other parts test o.k..,the defrost tstat has to be below 32 degrees or it will test bad/open,when the evaporator coil gets iced up you cannot blow cold air through a solid block of ice,(NO air flow)means no cold air throughout the unit even with the evaporator fan running

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Radiator Fan Doesn't run

Have you confirmed the fan has a good ground, sounds like you have eliminated the issue of 12 volts, when you turn on the fan then the AC does the compressor run? if the compressor runs pull the plug to the fan motor and check to see if has 12 volts with a test light, wait for moment because the fan may not run until the AC system pressure reaches a certain pressure point, this means that even though the compressor is running the fan may not always run, There is a quick test for the fan circuit, disconnect the fan sensor at the thermostat housing, the fan should come on, this is failure mode, so if the switch goes open the fan will run to keep the engine from overheating , let me know after the tests are run.
