Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Denon Stereo audio cassette deck DR-M30HX traction prob thin tape

Denon Stereo audio cassette deck DR-M30HX exhibiting wow/flutter and stopping, ''loose'' on rewind on longer length commercial audio cassettes, although typical 30 min per side currently OK, and my own CrO2 C90 are working fine. Deck has had relatively little use over 25 years but now I am digitising my old cassettes (which are in good condition - no sign of mould or oxide shedding). I am assuming the two capstans and any drive belts are beginning to go (never previously replaced). Am I on the right track? Are the required spares ''standard'' in nature? Can I get spares for this still valued deck? Is this a repair a moderately technical person could do themselves?

Belts for decks are universal, there are plenty of places on the web selling them. Parts for a Denon from 25 years ago is another matter. However I think you might need only the belts, as the longer tapes speed problems suggest that it's the load that's causing the belts to struggle. All you need to do is measure the diameter of any belts for replacement. HOWEVER before you remove them make a note, or photographer, how and where they fit.
Use Servisiol Video 40 to clean the rollers and head.

Deck is running too slow

The unit either needs a new belt, Capstan bearing oiling as in taking the flywheel out and if this does not fix it a new capstan motor. The motor is adjustable with a small screw driver provided you have the appropriate wow and flutter meter and test tape to do the job.

Marantz Cassette Deck Plays Tapes Slightly Too Fast

The speed should be adjustable but the common practice is to use a frequency counter and test tape or test tape and wow and flutter meter. I look at this from a Technician's point of view as I have been fixing units for 45 years so far. Once the motor speed control is found it does not take too long. Sometime it take more time taking the cover off.

My pioneer ct-f7171 cassette deck needs a little speed adjustment, where is the pot located?

Usually on the back of the servo motor. You need a speed alignment tape and frequency counter or wow and flutter meter to do this adjustment correctly. Often times the speeds go up as the motor start to fail.

Denon 1403/483 hooking up equalizer to it so it works

ANY analog tape deck or external processor woul go into the VCR OUT / IN pair or the CDR/Tape OUT / IN pair. Out of one device to in of the next then back.

Though not specifically addressed in the manual, I believe that operationally, ONLY ANALOG sources will go OUT to the Tape or Processor (whether or not the Tape or VCR is selected). Once you select either one of those the analog audio will be heard AFTER the external device proceeses or records it. It would be the same as Playing a tape.

However, digital sources will be disabled once the VCR or Tape is selected.

Denon DRW-585 dual-cassette deck makes clicking sound

There is an outside chance your tape cassett has a static charge. Tape in plastic case of cassette can build up significant electrical static which can partially discharge as tape is run. It can sound like random thumps, ticks, pops ect. Wrap cassette in a damp (not dripping wet) cloth, for several hours, then try again. This can also happen to the reels and drive rollers of the deck
