No it won't, you'll experience "memory card error" if you try. It was designed well before the SDHC format came out.

I am trying a new SDHC memory card in our Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera and it says memory card error, any information would be greatly appreciated, Thanks Diana F.

Your fix is a very simple one. Your camera is only compatible with SD cards, and you're trying to use it with an SDHC card.

SDHC is a later technical development of the SD to allow larger capacity. Your camera was designed and made when SDHC development was still just a vague idea for the future. 512MB was all that your camera was guaranteed to work with as they were the largest capacity cards then available. You may wish to look at the user manual for yourself, page 170.

SD cards are available up to 4GB in theory, but in practice almost no SD device can go above 2GB, According to the MyMemory website your camera will accept 2GB SD cards (see details), but from experience even if it works you may find that the camera operation becomes very sluggish when the card gets more than half full. You are also likely to find that at the maximum capacity your camera is very choosy about which brands it will work with reliably. Staying at or below 1GB should ensure the maximum usability.

There is no way to update your camera to the newer standard as the SDHC card requires different internal hardware and firmware.

I hope that you've found my solution to have comprehensively answered your question, please take a moment to rate my answer.

I have a SanDisk SDHC Card class 4 4 gb and it won't work in my Canon Power shot SD630, I get a memory error that says card is locked, however card is not locked, what camera canI use this card in?

The SD630 works with MMC and SD cards, 2GB or smaller. It does not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

Your SDHC card can be used in any camera that accepts SDHC cards.

I have a 4GB SD HC card that works well in my Powerhot SD750 but gives an error code "Memory Card Error" and "Card Locked!" on my PowerShot S2 IS. Is there a fix for this? Peter

The S2 IS uses SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work. While you can use SDHC cards with the SD750, you will have to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller, with the S2 IS.

Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera will not highlight the format option so I can format my new SDHC memory card

The S2 IS is designed to work with SD cards, not SDHC cards. While an SDHC card will fit into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

How do you unlock the memory card

If your using an SD card you might need to slide the lever on the side of the actual memory card itself. The little lever is a hardware lock that prevents it to be written to or files to be deleted from it.

Why won't my S2 IS camera allow an 8gb sd card to work, even though it allows the card to enter and fit the slot.

The S2 uses SD cards. Cards bigger than 2GB are actually SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards. They have the same form factor so that SD cards will continue to work in SDHC devices, but there are hardware differences that keep SDHC cards from working in SD devices. Since this is in the hardware, this state cannot be altered by a firmware upgrade.

You'll have to stick with cards 2GB and smaller for this camera.

SD CARD

The 2 Gbytes SD card will work for sure !
The only questions it is about if it will take the so called SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) which are all the SD cards bigger than 2 GBytes.

Check the user manual/guide for any information regarding SDHC before you buy. and always buy the fastest SD card !! ;-)
