Question about Compaq Computers & Internet
It’s very possible to do and no it doesn't matter that each drive runs at different Rpm speeds.
The difference between a hard disk drive that runs at 5400Rpm and a 7200 Rpm is data transfer speed. The 7200 drive will run faster but the drives cache also plays a big part when transferring data. A drive that runs at 7200Rpm with a 16MB cache will run faster than a drive with 8MB cache. The 7200Rpm drive will run a little hotter than a 5400Rpm drive and use a little less power. Typically you’d want to use the 7200Rpm drive as the primary drive. (With windows installed on it).
The 5400Rpm drive should be used as a storage drive and be connected on the same data cable as a slave drive. How to safely remove data from the 5400 drive. Before you shut down the system, open windows explorer. Click on the C:\ than delete the Boot.ini, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and IO.SYS files. (By doing this the drive will no longer be bootable but all the data will stay intact). Shut down the system. Remove the 5400Rpm drive from the system. Install the 7200Rpm drive. (The new drive is an IDE drive. Set its jumper so it is a Master.) Guide to setting-up an IDE drive; http://freepctech.com/pc/001/installing_ide_devices.shtml
Set the jumper for the 7200 drive as a Master with a slave. (The 5400 drive will be added later).
Once the drive is configured and installed boot the system and enter the bios/CMOS menu. Press the delete key to enter the bios or watch you're screen you may need to press the F1, F2 key or F10 key to enter the bios menu. Instruction on how to move about while in the bios is shown at the bottom of the bios screen. You should see the model numbers of you’re 7200 DiamondMax drive within the main bios menu.
You will also need to set the boot menu / boot order.
Open the Boot menu. A typical boot menu would list as follows:
1st Boot device, Floppy disk drive
2nd Boot device, CD-ROM drive
3rd Boot device, Primary hard disk drive.
4th Boot device, not needed
Compaq does not provide bios settings within their user guide. Before you save and exit the bios, open the CD-ROM drive and load you're windows CD or the restore CD from Compaq. Save and exit the bios. When the system reboots it should start up the windows CD or the restore CD. Follow the on-screen instructions from the restore CD. Once windows is installed update windows. When finished it is now time to add the old 5400Rpm drive. Shut down the system. You will need to change the jumper on the on the 5400Rpm drive. Set the jumper to Slave and insert it into an open bay. Connect the data cable and power cable. Check that all cables are fully connected. Boot you're system. Windows should load. You're 5400Rpm drive will most likely be labeled as letter E. You can change the drive letter order by opening the run window. Click Start and in the run window type in: diskmgmt.msc than click ok. Open Help. Click, help topics. Click on disk management.
