Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

1 Answer

No power + reset button not available

I have a badger 5 insinkerator that stopped working today. When it had gotten stuck before, I had used an alien wrench to free any particles and used to start it up with no further issues. However , this morning my friend tried to run it while I wasn't around, and it had just hummed. Since she didn't know what to do she had left it humming for ~20 seconds at which point it had stopped altogether. Once I got to know about it, I immediately tried the alien wrench and freed up the clog. Since, there was no hum anymore, I checked the circuit breakers to see whether any had tripped. Didn't see that any had tripped but still reset the breakers anyway. Then I looked under the unit for the little red button that resets the unit itself. Unfortunately, it looks like the red button had either got sucked up inside the unit or had fallen off at some point, as I couldn't see it anymore. I took a peek into the hole where the button should be and all i could see was some wiring inside. Any ideas on what I should do next ?

I understand that you reset all the breakers, but my question is do you have a tester to ensure whether or not you are actually receiving power upto the disposal?

Insinkerator stopped working. Cutting plate rotates freely. tHE RESET BUTTON IS STUCK IN THE "ON" POSITION.

If the reset button is stuck in the on position and can not be reset, the motor has an internal overload and will need to be replaced. Turn the power off to the motor via switch or circuit breaker, let it cool for awhile, the hit the reset button again to see if it resets. If it does, turn off the power at the breaker and leave it off. At this time, you need to dislodge a jam on the rotary vane that shreds the waste, there is something most likely stuck on the vane, causing the motor to overheat. There should be an allen wrench socket area in the middle of the underside of the motor housing, use an allen wrench and turn the motor manually back and forth, to release the jam. Again, be sure the power is OFF!!!

The reset button seems to be stuck on my badger 5 disposal. how do I fix it

Does your garbage disposal cutter wheel rotate freely
Get a wood stick or broom handle and put it inside garbage disposal
Use broom handle to rotate cutter wheel
If wheel is stuck, wedge broom handle against side of sink opening and use it to push the wheel free
Once wheel is free, try reset again

If wheel rotates freely, try resetting with power off
Turn off circuit breaker to make sure power is really off and switch isn't bad
Try reset again.

If reset will not click in with power off, then there is a short inside disposal, and disposal is bad

One last thing ... the reset may be bad.
You might open wiring cover and see if reset wires are visible and see if you can by-pass reset wires .... but if there is a short, then bypassing reset could be a serious fire or electrocution hazard.

Replacing unit
Insinkerator-brand disposals used to snap into the same sink strainer so all you had to do was disconnect old one and reconnect new one without removing sink strainer. Then buy a can of 'rectoseal' from the plumbing department. Clean off tubular drain pipes and washers. Re-assemble tubular pipe joints and brush gooey rectoseal on the washers when re-assembling so there is no leak.

The badger might have same easy replacement

There should be a reset button (circuit breaker) on the bottom of the unit. It sounds more like the blades are stuck. Pull the plug on the unit and use an allen wrench on the manual blade turner on the bottom of the unit. If the blades are stuck, you will have to try and loosen them with the allen wrench. If you do get them loose, the question then is what was holding them. Could be debris in the ISE or something broken like a blade. Keep the unit unplugged when working on it.

Is there a reset button on the Badger 5

Yes, on bottom a little recessed button should be pushed to reset the device. If the blade is stuck, the reset might not work but just keep tripping the breaker so you have to free up the blades with a broom stick or other item stuck into the disposal (with the power off of course) to turn the blades manually. Then try the reset button again. and hit the switch. Otherwise, check your kitchen's electrical breaker to see if it has tripped as well.
