If it is an LCD TV, then there may be lighter areas due to the location of the display backlights.

Areas closest to the backlights will be slightly lighter.

Should be. Only other thing would be to alter contrast / brightness settings on black screen.

Failing that, if it's under warranty get it checked out.

    Could be a failed backlight.

There is a big block in my TV screen covering 8 to 10 inches. I have a Sony Bravia, model KDL-40S4100, and i bought it in 2008.

if it is a black block, look in the menu under closed captions and see if it is in the text mode. if so change back to cc1 or turn off.

We have a Sony Bravia 40'' LCD that the screen went white and then black and won't come back on. The power button comes on but no picture. Just bought the TV in Nov 2009

the most likely the t-connector board became unplugged or failed completely (sits right behind the screen modual at the top&center) or.. the logic board has went kaput on ya...ontop of that, you are dealing with the notorious sony. try and get a replacement if under warranty. do not settle for thier refurbishing.

repairing these things i can tell you , it could be anything from a bad connection or ring cracks to completely failed parts. but only if i was in it would i know for sure. but the symptoms suggest t-connector or the logic board.

My brand new 40" SONY Bravia LCD TV picture goes darker or brighter while watching DVD movie automatically. It does not happen while watching regular TV. What setting should I turn off ?

This is a characteristic of the dynamic backlight used on this set.Turn off the dynamic contrast in the customer menu this should solve your problem.

Sony BRAVIA KDL-40W4000

Hi there,

I've been looking into this myself as I've also recently purchased the KDL-40W4000. I was watching a murky old film and was getting a bit of sludgy ghosting but found that by reducing the contrast to 25, setting the backlight on low, colour on neutral and the brightness about 40-60 (and taking ALL advanced noise functions off), this reduced the ghosting considerably.

BUT, this is quite a cool and dark image. If you watch standard TV and films mainly, a variation of the Cinema setting is probably the best overall setting i.e.

backlight: min
contrast: 79
brightness: 50
colour: 53
colour temp: Warm 2 (although Warm 1 is less yellow and still fine)
sharpness: min
noise reduction: off
mpeg nr: off
contrast enhancer: off
colour space: standard
