Ac power problems

Ihave a hp zv5000 laptop & need to install a new AC Jack on my motherboard, can this be done very easily. I have taken the unit apart several times and th eprocess doesn't seem all that difficult, my only problem is soldering the new ac jack in place and not to damage any other part of the motherboard. I have located a company in Toronto,On that provides this service, under 75.00 is it worth sending out for repair.

Thanks
Chris

For $75.00 bucks I wouldn't even open it up... lol Thats a good deal if they do a good job. Thats a fair price too I charge like $65 - $80 and hour depending on what is being done. remembering of course we often in actuality often work on something for 6 hours, and only charge 2 - 3, because a job is worth what a job is worth.

My HP laptop will not turn of even when plugged in

Here below are possible causes and troubleshooting steps of laptop that can't power on, hope it may help:
Possible causes:

1. AC adapter failure.
2. Power jack failure.
3. Motherboard failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solutions:
1. Test the AC adapter with a digital multimeter. It's possible that you have a failed AC adapter. If you don't have a multimeter, test your laptop with another known good AC adapter.

2.It's possible that power jack (socket where you plug the AC adapter) is broken. Remove the motherboard and take a closer look at the power jack. In some cases you can fix the jack by resoldering it on the motherboard. In other cases you have to replace the jack with a new one. Using a multimeter, test if the power goes to the motherboard through the jack.

3. If replacing the AC power adapter and jack on the motherboard doesn't help, most likely you have a bad motherboard. Replace the motherboard.

My hp pavilion dv6-2117ax laptop won't power up (no power light on where adaptor meets laptop). Replaced power adaptor / charger and laptop powered up and operated for a day and then next day woul

The laptop probably isn't charging. Could be a bad d/c connector on the laptop or the battery is bad. Remove the battery and plug in the a/c adapter and see if it powers on. Wiggle the a/c plug in gently while pressing the power button on the laptop. It powers on and off briefly then I'd say it's the d/c jack on the laptop, bad sodder joint.

Msi wind u120 ac connector quit working? problem @ the computer not the ac cord. can i repair this?

The DC jack, where you plug the power adapter cable, might be loose or defective, & needs to be either re-soldered or replaced.
In order to do this, the laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard taken out. Also, the motherboard needs to be checked for defective/burned out components in the area near the DC jack. Any defective/burned out components found should be replaced, or you might need to replace the laptop's motherboard altogether.

How do i get my hp pavilion zv5000 to run on ac power only. it will only run on the battery.

Zv5000 Laptops are plagued with problems related to the jack on the back of the computer. After prolonged use the jack tends to make the solder joint loose. Jacks can also go bad. The solution would be to check if the power comes on momentarily when wiggling the plug in the jack, if the power comes on intermittently then chances are you have a loose solder joint and may need repaired by a qualified tech. Fortunately, for the technically savvy this may be done carefully provided the proper static sensitive precautions are taken, due to the fact the computer must be totally dismantled to get to the jack and properly inspect the solder connections and repair or replace the jack. Silver heat sink compound must also replace the silicone on the processor ( one dab and compress, do not spread compound!) The jack need should it be replaced can be found on Ebay

Hi,

There's a lot of causes why this has happened in your laptop. Here are some possible causes and solutions to this problem:

Since you bought a new laptop battery, probably it is good and your AC power adapter also, because you said that the power cord light remains on. I think what you mean for the power cord is that it is the AC power adapter.

First, try to power up your laptop through the new laptop battery that you recently bought if you believe it is holding a charge and make sure you don't plug in the AC power adapter into your laptop. But before you turn on the laptop, make sure that the contacts between your laptop battery and your laptop motherboard is making a good connection. Because sometimes it will not, maybe something spilled in there or there's some dust covering the contacts or some sort of dirt and they're not making a clean connection. To be sure that this is not happening to the contacts or your laptop battery and the motherboard of your laptop, pull the battery out, take a toothbrush and just scrub in between the pins of the battery there and also scrub down the the pins where the motherboard connection is (which is the contacts between the battery and your laptop motherboard, where you install the battery). If you are done doing this, put the battery in and turn the laptop on.

If the steps above doesn't solve your problem, try this one:

* Pull the battery out
* Remove main supply
* Hold power button down for 30 seconds. This will drain the charges in your battery.
* Put only power supply in
* Do not put battery in
* Turn laptop on
* Put the battery in

If you're done doing the steps above and did not solve your problem you can try the steps below:

You have to test if there's a fix voltage on your AC power adapter by using a voltmeter, usually 18 to 19V DC depending on the registered voltage written on your AC power adapter. If there is, kinda bend or jiggle the power cord a little bit to make sure the connections is tight. If the voltage remains steady, then probably your AC power adapter is good. Now we have come to the point that we need to deal with your laptop motherboard. There's a lot of reasons why your laptop won't power on even if you have a good laptop battery and AC power adapter. Maybe your laptop motherboard is partially bad, like for example if the dc jack on your laptop is bad and is not making a connection to the motherboard then it might look like the battery is bad as well because the battery is now now holding a charge or even taking a charge. Now this has happened a lot to plenty of laptop owners where their dc jack goes bad. They think their batteries gone bad because is not taking a charge anymore, they got and buy a new battery and then decide to bring their laptop to a laptop repair company because of the battery's not charging even with the new battery, that's because the dc jack is bad. You're going to probably right into this a lot where the battery's not charging because the dc jack is bad and until you fixed that, the battery's never going to charged. So how do you test if your dc jack is bad? It's simple, plug in the AC power adapter, take the battery out of the computer. If the computer doesn't power on then you know you have a problem with the dc jack. The only way to solve this, is that you have to disassemble your laptop, start taking components out one by one and finally, take the laptop motherboard out. Afte you've taken the motherboard out, look where the dc jack is connected. After you will find it, take a file tool and file off a spot on the motherboard where you can reattach the power jack and use a wire to reattach the power jack to the motherboard.

Hope you will find this answer helpful. God bless

For all those with the ZV series power jack problem, I have replaced a few of these jacks and it is not an easy job unless you are an engineer.

The entire laptop needs to be disassembled, all the panels need to be removed, including the keyboard and you almost have to remove the motheboard.

Even when you eventually gain access to the offending part, you will need to be competent in using a soldering iron to remove the jack without damaging the printed board, then clear the holes so the new jack can be fitted.

While you are doing all this, you need to remember that the circuitry is static sensitive. This means that you can kill your motherboard just by touching it.

When you have finally finished the job, unless you have been pretty smart, you'll end up with a box full of different size screws and you won't know what goes where!

With the ZVs I have repaired, I usually supply a short jumper lead that plugs into the power jack on the back of the laptop. This is two or three inches long with a cable power socket on one end and a power plug on the other. This means that the user can leave the power plug plugged into the laptop all the time and just disconnect and reconnect the power unit from the other end of the patch lead instead of wearing out the laptop's power jack.
