I had Windows 98 OS on my desktop and I wiped it out and installed Windows XP. My system performed better before I did this, how do I get rid of XP and reinstall Windows 98? I don't have the Windows 98 CD ROM. LOL!

If you don't have the Windows 98 CDROM, or an image backup of your Windows 98 installation (if you don't know what an image is then you don't have one) then you're in a tough spot.<br><br>
You can't just "go back" to your Windows98 machine, you will have to reinstall Windows 98 from a CDROM. So you will have to find a disc from someone/somewhere and hope it's the same version of 98 that your product key was for (if you have the product key). Or you can purchase a new copy of Windows 98SE. They cost around $55 from several websites (viosoftware.com for one).<br><br>
On another note, if you computer is running slower with XP it's most likely due to the amount of RAM being low. Try to get at least 1GB of RAM in your current PC and you'll probably see XP run better. You could also try installing Ubuntu, it's a free operating system.

I want to get rid of windows vista and install windows xp

I suggest to upgrade to Windows 7 instead of downgrading because Windows 7 has better performance than Vista. But if you still want to go to Windows XP you have 2 choices.
The first is to format the drive where Vista is installed and to install fresh copy of Windows XP.
Second choice is to install Windows XP as second OS and at the end of the installation, at activation step, you have to choose activation by Phone. Then you should call Microsoft Helpdesk and provide the code of your Windows XP to the operator and tell him that you need downgrading Vista code. Then he will guide you to the rest of the activation and the downgrade of Vista.

Good luck!

I have a Gateway Performance 500 PC using Windows 98 operating system. Can I update or do I need to replace this computer?

I would expect it would be much easier...and probably cheaper in the long run...to replace the computer. This machine does not meet minimum specs for Windows 7, and XP is no longer supported. Vista is an option, but requires as much in system resources as 7 and 7 is a much better (IMHO) system. This machine uses a Pentium III CPU and won't manage sufficient RAM to do a decent job with a modern OS. Windows 7 has an extensive driver library built in.

Hope that's helpful.

Trojan on HDD want to Zero out and reinstall OS

Just to make sure of a few things, you actually want to install windows 98 when you could install windows XP? and the other thing is that you do not need to acutally "Zero" the drive out -as in writing zeros to all sectors- formatting it will suffice to remove a virus.

I have /had Windows 98 on my computer and a friend installed windows xp. I tried to get rid of Xp but lost Win 98, I have the original RestoreDisk for my compaq but it will not let me install to get back...

Have you tried booting the system with the restore disk, well it should reformat the system before it installs a fresh copy of windows 98 so you should back-up data before proceeding and check the boot sequence in your bios, set the first boot device to CD/DVD.

I hope this helps:)

Install Xp From Dos

If XP will not install from the CD or if you have a new drive with no operating system onit yet try these:

Install Windows XP from the hard drive with Windows 98 already installed:

Boot Windows 98
Insert the XP CD into your CD reader
Explore Windows XP through My Computer
Copy i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder and double click on winnt32.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive

Install Windows XP from DOS (ie. no OS on a new hard drive):

Boot with a Windows 98 Start Up disk
Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD reader
Run smartdrv.exe from the Win98 directory on the windows 98 CD (file caching)
Type cd.. to back up to the root directory
Insert Windows XP CD into the CD reader
Copy the i386 folder to C:\
Go into C:\i386 folder on C: and type winnt.exe to launch the setup from the hard drive.

Restore Disc

You can purchase the restore disks from Compaq directly if they still have any in stock. You can go to their website.  I would not recommend reinstalling 98 on the computer. You would be better off wiping off the system and installing xp on it being that 98 is old and no longer supported.

Hope this helps you
