The component connection should have one red, one green, and one blue connector that will connect to the back of your player and the back of your television. Then there should also be another red and a white connector that should run from the AUDIO L & R OUT of your player to the AUDIO L & R IN beside the Component IN connections on your TV. The yellow cord would normally be running from the VIDEO OUT on the back of your player to one of the VIDEO IN connections of your TV.

Most likely ther's something wrong in the settings - this happens when you get a Composite ( yellow)signal in a Component (yellow+ blue+red) connection.
First of all make sure you have selected the correct plugs on both the tv and the dvd - the yellow/video composite + red/right + white/left should be in their own separate box. Then check that the cable is correctly plugged in. Finally check that the tv is set to use the Composite, not Component AV entry.

If you have the original remote for the TV there should be a button that says Input or I Select or something similar. You need to change your "Input" to L1 or L2 or AV, or something similar.
