If there are no screws on the underside (like mine) you need to remove the top light cover. There are tabs on either side that need to be pressed in so it pops out. Under the light cover there are two screws located in the center. Remove those and the blue and black components should come right off.

If you turn the power brush over there are (2) screws on the bottom close to the back wheels on each side. Remove the screws and you will be able to separate the top cover from the base and get to the belt. You can get a replacement belt here:

Turn the power head over so the bottom is facing up. On the bottom towards the back there are two holes (one on each side) where you can get to the access screws. Remove the two screws (you'll need a phillips screwdriver). With the screws removed you can now remove the top cover from the base by pulling out on the two clips on each side of the power head. With the top cover removed you can get to the belt and roller brush. If you need a belt for this model you can get it here:

Sears Kenmore Whispertone Vacuum Problem:

If you push inwards on each side of the light cover on top you can remove it. With the light cover removed remove the (2) access screws. Now you will be able lift of the entire top cover from the base. You will then see the belt and roller brush, remove the old belt and replace with a new one. The roller stop turning, power is on.

After you have removed the screws you need to remove the rubber bumper that encircles the vacuum head.

There are two screws. Pry off the light bar on top by pushing against the sides, and you will see them inside just behind the light bulb.

The belt in the PowerMate won't run

If the motor on the floor attachment runs, it could just be a worn belt - it can be replaced. Also check the switch to turn the attachment on, and the electrical connections in the hose and wand from the vacum all the way to the attachment. An electrical meter could be used to check for power at the motor in the attachment also - just be careful. Here's the instruction book, in case it's of use.

Depending on which model, there is a couple of scres on the bottom, then on each side and back are release catchs that you pry up to release the top, then you can get to the belt. The other model you take off the light cover, it just snaps in place, then you can take out 2 screws from the top, on each side there is a slot, put a screwdriver up into the slot and pry out to release the tabs, then the cover comes off and you can get to the belt.
