Sounds like you might have to initialize the hard drive. Go to the left on that hard drive (where it says Disk 1 or 2, etc) and right click. It should give you the option to initialize. From here you should be able to format, etc.

Good Luck,

When i connect my portable hard disk to my pc...its simply not getting detected....

Listen closely to the drive, if it sounds like it is clicking then it is probably not getting enough power through the usb. If you received a cable with a split dual USB plug for extra power. Make sure that both large USB plugs are in the computer while the smaller one is attached to the drive, this will give it enough power to start working. If it is not clicking and has plenty of power then it could be that it is mapped to a drive letter that is already in use. Under device manager, (right click my computer and select manage then click on disk management) If you see the device in there then you can right click on the bar graph representation of the disk and select to change drive letter and paths. This will allow you to remove the conflict and have it show up again.

If your computer or laptop has a problem detecting a USBhard drive or a USB device, and another computer can detect it, then theproblem could be a RF interference problem. Try using an USB cable that is a shielded USB cable (ie. AnUSB cable that has a clear plastic covering and you can see a metallic weavewhich covers the wires) OR a USB cable that has a Ferrite core attached to theUSB cable (the ferrite core is a cylindrical object approximately 30mm long X15mm diameter and it is attached to the USB cable near the connector).

I am trying to download movies off my friends portable hard drive onto my laptop but when I plug in my friends hard drive into my laptop, my laptop don't recognize it and nothing comes up???

Your laptop's usb port may not have enough power to keep the portable hard drive running.

You may require additional power to the portable hdd by using a usb cable with 2 usb connectors.
or use a USB port that is powered.

I attached the portable drive to my computer and i don't know what else to do

If a Windows based machine, locate and double click "My Computer" (or similar). A box will open and show the devices attached to your computer. Fixed drives such as "C:" appear under "hard disks and CD, DVD players, external drives and thumb drives will appear as "devices with removable storage" or as "portable storage"

Plug the drive's USB cable into the computer (if it isn't already) and double click the new drive to view the contents. Often times, these drives ship with software to perform back ups, or other utility - or include the manual and warranty information. You can use the drive as if it were one of the other permanently connected drives inside your computer.

Make sure that you click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the System Tray BEFORE unplugging the drive's USB cable. Data loss can result if disconnected before the data has been written completely to the disk.

I hope this helped & good luck!
