All laptops have inbuilt wireless network cards. You would need to have a wireless access point which has internet connectivity at your home or office. If available, you need to search for the wireless network and get connected. Some networks are secured so you would have to contact the administrator for the key.
if it's a tower... you'll need a linksys pci wireless card... and a linksys router... install the drivers first... then... with the computer off... follow instructions for installing the card... connect the antenna... and then turn on. wiat for the computer to boot... it should automatically find the card... now... on the back of the cable modem... disconnect the wire that was going to the computer... and put it in the connection on the router that says "internet", now... disconnect the cable modem... wait 30 seconds... then plug it back in... wait 1 min. for everything to come up... now... connect the power to the router... and wait 1 min... go to the linksys icon in the taskbar... and double click on it... survey the site... when you find the wireless networks that are avil... choose the one that's got the strongest signal... and click connect. now... open the internet broser... and go to tools... internet options... then connections, down at the bottom... you'll see lan... click on it... you should see a box that says automatically detect settings... make sure this is checked...then click apply... then on o.k... and exit the internet.... then go back in... you should have internet...
Your Dell does not have built-in wireless capability. You will have to purchase a wireless PCMCIA card for this computer. Once you get the card, you place it in the card slot on the side of the computer and install the software--actually, I believe you install the software first. Anyway, once the card is installed, you will be able to access wireless networks. I usually recommend Linksys cards as I've had good experiences with them.
If your running xp, make sure the netowrk card is not disabled, make sure you rnot using a cross over cable. use the cable you got with the routers. Try reinstalling the network card, goto dell support andenter you model to get the drivers.
1 thing to check. goto start ,control panel. double click on netowrk conections. right click on the main conection witch is the card in your pc, goto properties. andin the list internet protocol (tcp/ip) click this. and pres properties.
make sure in here obtain ip addres is automatically. and obtain dns is auto too.
I bought my sister a Dell laptop that didn't have a dial up modem in it, never saw one that didn't have one. Dell sells a dial up modem that goes into the usb port for about $35, which I sent to her and it works. Basically it is just an external dial up modem. Give it a try, just call the dell help phone number.
Go into Network connections in control panel and right click on the wireless network icon, then click on properties. In here change the settings so that Windows manages your wirless settings rather than the Belkin software, I find this normally works a lot better and more reliable. You should then be able to double click the wireless icon (Not the Belkin Icon) in the bottom corner of your screen and connect to your wireless network. Rgds, Geoff
1. You can disconnect the Rj45 cable from the PC & connect
it directly to your notebook's Rj45 port. You should have access to the internet if a minute or two.
2. if you want access to both, Pc & notebook you'll need a wireless router. Like the link below. Click it. http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1138056788757&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=8875739789B01
You can find these types of wireless routers at places like Wallmart & Best Buy. They come in even smaller packages.
With the software that is included you'll be connected to the internet in no time. Linksys also provides security so someone near to your home can not tap your internet service & get a free ride. Linksys provides setup assistance from day one.
Hope this helps you Linda!
personally i would go for a usb wireless adapter as many people have driver problems with the pcmcia slot and are unable to get it to recognise the card, whereas usb is much simpler to use.
All the usb type adapters are much the same they dont have to be the same make as your router, but buy the same transfer speed type, for example if you have a 108MBPS router buy the compatible 108 MBPS adapter as a 54MBPS adapter will reduce the transfer speed capabilty, not to be confused with your connection speed.
