Only plays black and white. - Car Audio & Video

    Bestdarngood,

I purchased a multi-regional DVD player (LG DV340) so I can play Australian DVDs that my father in law sends me from Aussie. On one T.V. the picture rolls non-stop so I cannot even due the initial programming for language etc. On the other T.V. it works but only plays in black and white. Both T.V.s are standard. Not digital or flat screen. Please advise.

    Benjamin,

I bought the DVD players here in the U.S. and we have bought them here before and had no problem. It says in has a built in video converter. If that does not work, where would I look for a PAL to NTSC converter?

    Bestdarngood,

Still no luck. Of course I can buy an adapter but the whole point to buying a multi region DVD is that you don't have to have an adapter. Any other tips before I go to the next technician.

I figured out the color. Just can't stop the primary T.V. from constant rolling. Do you think that the technology in this T.V. is too outdated?

    Dear folks,

I just bought a multi region DVD player that enables us to watch Australian DVDs on our U.S. television. We have done this for years. The new DVD player sends a rolling picture that will not stop rolling. It is not the DVD player because it works fine on one of our T.V.s. Can you help?

  • jrams75 Feb 05, 2010

Is it not possible to buy some type of converter to fix the problem? New T.V. is not in the budget right now.

  • jrams75 Feb 05, 2010

Can I adjust it or do I need to take it to a T.V. repair shop?

    JR

  • jrams75 Feb 05, 2010

Do I have to take the back off of the T.V. or is this potentiameter external?

The movie is encoded in an unsupported format - most likely PAL instead of NTSC.

It rolls because the tv (which works at a 60 Hz vertical refresh) can't sync with the video signal (which most likely is set at 50 Hz). I think you need a new tv.

  • Azrael SRL Feb 05, 2010

No convertor. But the vertical oscillator of the tv can be adjusted so it works at a lower frequency. If your tv has good components adjusting its free frequency at 55 HZ would make it work with both the video and the cable/antenna signal.

  • Azrael SRL Feb 05, 2010

All you need is a screwdriver to adjust a small potentiometer by looking at the screen. But you must find the correct one and that takes some experience.

  • Azrael SRL Feb 05, 2010

The last tv in which the potentiometer was externally accesible was a hybrid tube-transitor unit. Open the case and look for a tiny one next to a big circuit. If you're lucky it will be labeled on the board.

What exactly is the unit that you are talking about. A make and model number would be very helpful and anything else that you can give about the problem.

Thanks

The color loss is most likely due to a NTSC/PAL compatibility issue. If you bought the players overseas in a PAL region and the TV is NTSC or vice-versa, there will be a color loss. This because the different regions have different formats and when you go from one to the other, the color does no transfer over. You can buy a PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL converter to fix this issue.

Let me know how this works out for you.

Electronic/video stores or online are the best places to find them.

    Try this one

Also, if the player is still under warranty, you could try and exchange it or buy another one like it and see if the one you have has just gone faulty.

Let me know what you find.

In the menu, there may also be an option of what format this player is outputting. It may have accidentally gotten changed and is worth a look.

Well, you could also try a different cable between the tv and the dvd player in case the one you have is bad. They sometimes go bad, but rarely

It could be outdated. Could be a tracking problem otherwise if the rolling is on the dvd player only. How old and what kind of tv is it?

Sorry, just saw from a previous post that it is a tube tv most likely. Probably the tv just can't handle the signal from the player then.

VHS plays in colour and DVD plays in black and white.

there is a circuit in the color section to put the tv to black and white if the color subcarrier is missing from the broadcast signal.
it is called a color killer and needs to be adjusted.
it is for a technician to do.
it operates off the 3.58mhz color subcarrier.

Have a Konka TV but ps2 doesnt play through it.

It may be the T.V. And make sure that the connections are with the right colors, take a light back there and check to make sure. You said the T.V. plays through black and white, maybe the T.V. is old and can only play black and white but those cables will not make a T.V. go to color.

DVD'S Play only in black and white

In UK this occures when an NTSC picture is played from a DVD player to a TV which cannot enitrely hand NTSC format. Possible this will happen in the reverse for USA.

Also my TV cannot handle SVHS signals and also displays them in black and white.

Try changing settings on the DVD Player to Composite or RGB.
