Does this laptop have a key on the keyboard, you use to toggle from the laptop's monitor to an external monitor, and you used it, upon plugging the external monitor in, and turning it on? Are you sure the monitor cable is good? If the answer is yes to all of the above, you have a bad graphics chip.

Compaq turns on cap locklight on f12 light on and power light on black screen

Have you tested this laptop using an external monitor? If your laptop works good with an external monitor, it means your laptop screen is dead and needs to be replaced. If the external monitor displays black screen , it means there is something wrong with the GPU and or motherboard.

Hp pavilion dv4 laptop display works with external display only

Switch the display to the laptops screen. Shine a flash light on the screen and look very carefully for a faint image of what should be displayed. If you see it then either the back light or inverter board is dead. Usually the inverter board. These are housed inside the lid usually runnung alone the bottom of the display. If there is no image then the display is bad. The easiest fix would be to remove the entire lid and replace the whole thing. This will effectively replace all three parts I mentioned, but will be more expensive.

Apple PowerBook G4 screen shot. Will a new LCD screen fix problem?

The monitor is displaying some color it seems, so it might not be it. Can you plug in into an external monitor and see what happens? If it seems like the computer is alive and might display on it, get a new LCD Monitor. You might have problems beyond your monitor otherwise.

My lenovo Y510 ideapad turns on but the screen remains black. All of the buttons light up, but the screen stays like it is in sleep mode. I have tried rebooting, removing the battery but nothing seems to...

The next tim eit is turned on, try shiniing a bright flashlight directly on the screen.

If you can see anything there then the backlight has burned out on the screen, and will need to be replaced.

If you cant see anything, try hooking up an external monitor to the laptop, if you have a desktop the monitor for it will work for the test..

If the external monitor you hook up will work, then you will have to replace the screen..

( or at a minimum the inverter board, or check that the cables are tight that go to the screen)

CPU On Monitor Dead

The monitor, since it is under warranty is best to be examined by an authorized personnel or replaced. As for your laptop, I dont suppose it has a problem. Only that it should have been configured to send display to the external source once plugged.
There are 3 options
  • Native + External
  • Native alone
  • External alone
Your laptop is configured for the 3rd option. You can change this by getting into display properties and under your graphics card configuration. Please do comment if you need further assistance

Secondary monitor from a Laptop

If your laptop doesn't automatically detect the external monitor, there will be a function key you need to press to activate the external monitor connector. It's often on the top row of keys, but different manufacturers put their function keys wherever they like. The key will normally have a marking that looks like a little monitor screen. Connect your external monitor, hold down the F or Fn key and press the monitor key when you find it. Usually the first press will turn on the external monitor and turn off the laptop screen, then the second press turns the laptop screen back on. Some brands or models may not turn off the laptop display, though.

When you are able to view a video clip on the external monitor, We can rule out the issue with the software. Probably you need to check the connections and also the external monitor settings in the display. The reload might have changed the old setup

If you mean you hooked up an external monitor and you want to see the display there. Well there should be a Fn key combo to toggle the displays. It should be one of the keys that looks like a monitor plus the Fn key at the same time. Otherwise go into the Control Panel -> Display -> Settings and you can switch to the other monitor there. Hope this helps.

Compaq Presario laptop

First attach laptop to an external monitor and using the FN/ F keys toggle back and forth to the external display. If the external works OK then the video display adapter is fine and the problem is the TAB welds on the LCD. Time for a new LCD.
