Turning on Microphone of Viewsonic VX2255 LCD Display

I have just connected the USB output of a Viewsonic VX2255 LCD display and used the camera setup wizard. The Web Cam works, but I cannot get the microphone to register as an input device. I've looked at the menu activated from the controls at the side of the monitor, and I know that the sound is *not* muted. I don't know what incantation I'm missing.

I don't think that's it because I tried Skype and it never saw the microphone from the monitor. It's as if it's not connected. I am getting the idea that the USB connection does not connect the audio from the microphone, but that seems foolish.

I don't think that's it because I tried Skype and it doesn't even see the microphone. Neither does Windows. I would have thought that the USB feed from the monitor (which enabled the Web Cam) would also enable the microphone. But it seems that this might not be the case. I'm not sure if the Microphone requires an audio jack into the sound card, which would be weird.

The monitor itself has a web cam. That's what is confusing. The web cam on the Viewsonic VX2255 is at the top of the monitor. The microphone is at the bottom. Install the USB cable in the bottom and into the computer, install the software from Viewsonic, and the camera works. But there is no input when I speak into the microphone.

One would think that if they have the camera through USB, they would have the microphone as well.

Viewsonic's email support said that I needed to take the Line In (audio jack) into the Line Out/Audio Out of my sound card. (So, it seems that they are saying that the microphone is not digitized, but the camera is.) Still, their answer is weird because you would think a microphone went to the Line In of the sound card.

In the end, it took connecting the analog audio cable into the sound card input, and rebooting the machine so that it would recognize the new input. My guess is that anything newer would have had everything digitized, since it's harder to digitize images than sound. Just a weird mid level device.

I had the very same problem. The microphone audio is not carried through the USB connection only the video. You will need a 3.8mm mini jack cable to connect the monitor to the microphone input on your desktop. If you look on the back of your monitor you will find the audio plug it is a small round receptical, on my monitor it was next to the HDMI plug. It may even be labled line in (go figure).

The microphone setup should be with the communication software that you will be using such as SKYPE or OoVoo set up panel. It will not be at the monitor. I use OOVOO because I can do video call with six people at once.

Do you get the same problem when the webcam is connected directly to the PC's USB port? I do not think it is the monitor that is causing the problem since the USB ports on the monitor are just a powered USB hub. What brand of the webcam are you using?

I see, yeah, that makes no sense since just about all the USB webcam has built-in mic, both video and sound are digitized and sent through USB so you do not need extra cable just for microphone.

1. Verify the monitor's power cord is plugged firmly into the wall outlet and the back of the monitor.
2. Verify the monitor cable is firmly connected to the computer and the monitor.
3. Verify that you have turned the monitor power switch on.
4. If the power light on the monitor is not on, test the wall outlet (plug in a light or something you know works).
5. If the power light on the monitor is not on, try a different power cord.
6. If the power light is on and yellow or flashing, but nothing displays, or the display is incorrect, borrow a monitor from a friend. If that works, your monitor probably needs replaced.
7. Also, you could try your display on a friend's computer. If it doesn't work, your monitor probably needs replaced. If it works properly on your friends computer, the problem may be with your computers video output port, motherboard video chip (or video card, if you have one), or drivers.

In monitor camera doesn't work

Same problem here. This has nothing to do with USB able. Ofcourse I put that in the monitor!
We need a driver. It is not on the CD, there is only the LCD driver. Not the webcam driver. It is supposed to come with Windows.

First, be sure to have the latest software from logitech's website, and the latest MSN.

Then perform the following:

Execute the audio and video setup procedure within MSN Messenger 7.5. This procedure will allow you to assign an audio input and audio output device, as well as assign the video device of your choice to work with MSN Messenger.
1. Launch MSN Messenger and select the “Audio and Vide Setup” option from the “Tools” menu.

2. Click “Next to begin the setup process

3. In the “Speaker Setup” window, select the output device you would like to use with MSN Messenger. This step is specific to speakers or headphones. If your speakers or headphone device is connected to your computer, select the device by using the drop down menu provided. You can also set the desired volume level and click “Play Sound” for an audio sample. Once you are comfortable with the your selected options, Click “Next”

4. In the “Microphone Setup” window, select your desired input device from the drop down menu provided. This selection will be specific to a microphone connected to your computer. If your Logitech video camera has a built-in microphone, this option will be presented as “Logitech Mic” with your camera model name in parentheses as shown below. If you have an external headset device connected to your computer which hosts a microphone, select the devices name or model number in the drop down menu. Once your device is selected, adjust the microphone volume level to your preference and click next.
Note: the microphone volume level may need to be tested in order to find a comfortable listening level for you contacts. As a starting point, try setting the level midway and adjust when necessary by re-executing this procedure.

5. In the “Webcam Setup” window, select the video device you would like to use with MSN Messenger. Once selected you should see a display sample in the window provided. You can also click the “Options” button to make camera specific adjustments. Once completed, click the “Finish” button to apply your changes.

6. Once you have completed this process, MSN Messenger should now know the audio input (microphone) audio output (speakers or headphones) and video device (webcam) to use when engaging in an audio and or video conversation.
