I cannot see out of my viewer..only blackness. This is true of the flip out viewer as well. but, the menu is visible at all times and I can scroll through and make changes. All functions seem to work. It's like the cap is over the lens.

I have the same problem with this camera.

I can not see from the view finder or the screen display both are black. I can see the menu and display settings. I can display pictures that are on the memory card just fine. I changed to fresh batteries and have the same problem. Camera was fine the last time I used it.

Take a picture and download it to your computer. If the picture is also black, then this might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info (make sure you read the latest reader comments in the first link. You might get very very lucky if Canon fixes this with your model camera :-)

I have a Powershot S1 Is Camera and the lenses is distorted and can't see it.

Do you mean camera does not show live image to take pictures and it shows previously taken picture properly in playback?
If thats true, then it is most likely bad ccd imager that needs to be replaced.
Canon will replace it free of cost, click Canon CCD Imager Advisory for details.
Thanks.

Horizontal Lines after-photo.

Hi, I don't know if this is going to be your problem, but recently the Canon anounced a recall for Canon S1 IS, due CCD problems. Most people with this problem complains of lines on the image, or the image going completely black. Some are having their CCD changed, but most of the users are having their S1 replaced for a brand new S3. Contact the Canon Technical Support, and maybe you get a S3 for free...
