turn the mixture screw all the way in then back it out between 1 1/2 turns to 2 turns
that will get the engine to idle from there set the idle speed with the throttle screw to desired idle rpms
now turn the mixture screw in slowly until you see/hear a fall in rpms
now screw the screw out until again you hear /see a fall in rpms.
half of the number of turns back in from in to out will be the desired air /fuel mixture setting
adjust the idle with the throttle screw if it has altered
you can repeat the procedure again to fine tune the mixture after adjusting the throttle screw

Adjust air fuel mixture


Hi Wentzpatrick, on the right hand side of the carburator there is an idle adjusting screw with a spring behind it, turn screw clockwise to increase idle counter clockwise to decrease idle. There is also an air/fuel mixture screw inside a carb body lug that may or may not be plugged with an aluminum cap that's about 3/16" thick. This cap can be drilled out to acess the air/fuel mixture screw. Turning screw clockwise will lean out mixture and lower idle, turning screw counter clockwise will richen mixture and raise idle. You need to balance the two adjusting screws to obtain an idle of 950-1000 RPM then back out air/fuel mixture screw 1/4 turn, snap throttle to confirm responce, you may continue to back out air/fuel mixture screw untill desired throttle responce is achieved, if you see black smoke coming out of exhaust you have gone to far and need to turn screw back in 1/8 turn at a time. Check your throttle and choke settings. Something is causing the throttle plate in the carburetor to remain open or the governor is improperly set. I would reset the air/fuel mixture screws to one and a quarter turns out and back the idle screw all the way out. Make sure that the throttle cable operates the throttle properly and check the governor setting and reset the governor setting if needed. Start the engine and adjust from there. When the engine starts, adjust the idle screw until the engine idles. Adjust the fuel/air mixture screws for the best idle. Then run the RPM up and adjust the fuel/air mixture screws for the best run/idle combination. Don't forget to adjust the governor if the engine runs too fast or too slowly.

How to set my idle mixture screws on 2000 r1


Hi, Merlin the carburetor throttle shaft wheel has two cables the cable closest to the right side of the bike is the throttle cable and the one closest to the left side is the idle cable. Right about the middle between the two is the idle adjustment bolt it faces out towards the air filter end of the carb . The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle adjustment bolt clockwise to increases idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture bolt you may adjust it as well if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air fuel mixture bolt clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back it out 2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and adjust the idle adjustment bolt accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, adjust the air fuel mixture bolt 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture you are seeking the highest rpm your air fuel mixture bolt can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then readjusting the idle adjustment bolt back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture bolt all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor. Remove the spark plug and clean it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry or blow dry it. Look at the carburetor. You will see two small screws next to each other. Those are the fuel/air mixture screws. one controls fuel, the other controls air. First check the air filter to see if it is clogged with dirt and debris... if it is, wash it in a soap and hot water solution and let it dry. After it dries out, reinstall it. Then turn the air/fuel mixture screws in GENTLY all the way. Turn them out one and a quarter turns. Check your fuel/oil mixture to see if you have the correct ratio of oil to fuel (most machines run on a 40/1 ratio... 40 parts gas to 1 part oil in other words, 40 ounces of gas to 1 ounce of oil. If your fuel/air mixture screws are one and a quarter turns out, the fuel/oil mixture is correct and the air filter is clean, the motor should start. You will need to adjust the fuel/air mixture screws a little to get the saw running to your satisfaction.

the carburetor settings are easy : 1- locate the screw mixture air /fuel 2- wind the screw all the way in 3- unwind the screw 1 1/2 turn and this should be sufficient to set the carburetor back to its original settings for the air/fuel mixture . 4- as for the idling screw , wind it down to suit the revs required

How do i get more power from my 1975 cadillac eldorado engine ,also shes running too lean so need the mixture screws adjusting,are these in or out also the air filter is new thanks


The air/fuel mixture screws are usually capped off and the adjustment might not be possible, but if the air/fuel mixture screws are exposed then turning them in will lean out the fuel mixture, and turning the air/fuel mixture screws out will en-rich the fuel mixture.

With the engine fully warmed up and at normal idle speed adjust the air/fuel mixture screws one at a time, and turn each air/fuel mixture screw in until the engine just begins to mis-fire, then back out the air/fuel mixture screw one and a half turns to two turns to achieve a smooth idle.

Be certain that the air and fuel filter(s) are not plugged up (there might be a fuel filter inside of the fuel pump as well as the fuel filter/stone at the fuel inlet to the carburetor) and keep in mind that the minimum octane requirement for that engine is 91 octane, and 92 octane is the average octane rating for the premium higher grade fuel, so a bottle of octane booster added to a full tank of fuel will greatly improve the way the engine idles and performs.

That engine should have an electronic HEI (High Energy Ignition) distributor with the large distributor cap and with the ignition coil inside of the top of the distributor cap, and keep the tune-up parts in good condition and replace them when they wear out. The tune parts would consist of the distributor cap, ignition rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and the spark plugs should be gapped at .045 in.

For better performance from your El Dorado a 1 inch spacer under the carburetor will really help a lot if the hood clearance will allow it, and you will need to set the ignition timing to 10 degrees before top dead center, and adjust the accelerator pump on the carburetor for maximun pump efficiency so that as soon as the throttle is opened there is two healthy squirts of fuel from the accelerator pump, and they should squirt as soon as the throttle is opened, and if the throttle can be opened and the accelerator pump does not squirt fuel at the same time as the throttle is opened, then there will be a lag or stumble from the engine on take-off and a severe loss of engine performance. (The accelerator pump must pump fuel into the carburetor at the exact same time as the throttle is opened)

For better performance check the adjustment of the secondary throttle linkage, and let me know if you require assistance with any of the proceedures.

Be sure that the vacuum lines to the EGR valve are correctly routed and that the EGR valve is not operating at idle.

Also, that engine has a plastic timing gear that was used for the camshft timing gear, and I would seriously suggest that it is changed before trying to get any performance from that engine.

Other than those modifications, the engine would need a better camshaft and the catalytic converter removed to increase the performance of that engine.

There are two causes of your problem that I can think of: firstly, it may be that you, even after changing some jets, haven't got the air/fuel mixture right. If i were you, I'd put the standart jets back in, set the needle position to the middle position, and screw the air/fuel mixture screw 2,5 rotations ( 900 degrees) out from fully screwed in.
