I had a Porter-Cable that I was able to repair using three small pieces of lexan and a bandsaw. I took off one of the latches that were good and traced the pattern on the lexan and sawed out the handles. Cleaned them up with sandpaper andthen stacked them and drilled out the holes. Then I drilled two more holes for clearance for two 6-32 machine screws and nuts. Put the whole thing together and installed it - still working after four years.

I'm looking for an elevator crank handle for a slik master classic tripod 6857u

By elevator crank handle I presume you mean the centre column adjuster. May be available from the manufacturer or importer, otherwise try Ebay or your local friendly camera service centre.

How can I replace the quick release head for the libec th659dv tripod. A student has lost the plate but UK retailers do not seem to stock libec replacements.

Try a plate from another tripod. I have three different tripods, and the quick-release plates are all interchangeable.

Broken elevator column crank handle

Please state the make and model. But if it is any Vivitar model then like all budget tripods spares simply aren't available.

You either make a claim under the manufacturer's one year warranty or you chuck away your tripod and buy either another budget model or invest in a quality brand which does have spares support.

The only other option is to see if a friend or relative has an engineering workshop and can fabricate spare parts for you from scratch. It's likely to be a straightforward job, but not one which is worth paying for.

Leg lock broken

Assuming you still have the female part with the treads in tact, you can do what I did. I used a hose clamp, the kind used on radiators, but larger. First, take off the lock down knob, then put the hose clamp over the broken plastic housing and mark where the knob would screw through. Then remove the hose clamp, placing it on a sturdy surface and use a 5/16 drill bit to make a hole where the lock down know will pass through. Place the hose clamp over the plastic housing, insert the knob, tighten the hose clamp (but not so much that it restricts the tripod leg from moving) and you are done! I can send you pictures of the process and the final result. It saved me from buying a new tripod! I can be e-mailed at boingsplatplop@yahoo.com if you have questions.

The leg is slightly off the track, which is a curved piece which fits along the tripod support rail. If you're not careful when collapsing the legs you'll force the leg to go off-track like this.
