Question about Goodman Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Goodman condensing unit that freezes up occasionally during low ambient weather (20 F). Model # ssz160361ac with matching new air handler. I have adjusted the defrost time from 90 to 30min. This I thought took care of it but it happen again when the temp dropped really low. When watching, it will go into defrost and clear the coil. But this last time the coil did not clear when I woke up this morning and the system was calling for heat but not running the heatpump.

It is not freezing up because of the temperature, but because of ice being formed in inside. Either by a blocked condensation duct, or snow due to previous storm.

as most ac units are capillary tube control not tx valve having matched units is critical. as for cost the condensing unit is much more complex and expensive than the evaporator.

Low to zero pressure on low side test port

150 is low for high side pressure. may have to add more r-22 to system. if you had a blockage high side pressure should be higher. have you turned both service valves at condensor ccw completely?

The ideal pressures will be 68psi on suction and 225 psi on the liquid line.
If the pressures are close you should look for a blockage from dust in the evaporator coil, loose fitting air handler panels or a defective fan motor.

Hi,
No you can not use a R-410 air handler with a R-22 condenser unit...the exspansion devices are different as the properties of the refrigerants are enough different that they are not interchangable...
Really your only choice is to replace the whole unit as it sounds like the exspansion valve or the orfice is partially clogged and it makes you constantly freeze up....
There are some things you could do to make it work at reduced capacity but it is way beyond what I could tell you through a computer...

You have a low refrigerant charge. Your low reading which coresponds to the temp at the coil 49psi is about 20 degrees fr. It should be closer to 70 psi depending on the ambient temp indoors. The coil has to be above freezing I usually shoot for 38 to 40. your sub cooling needs to be at least ten. And if you cant feel the heat leaving throuhg the condenser fan it aint moving it.

Compressor freezes up at night and some during day.

You are being ripped off. The ambient (outdoor) temperature at night is low and therefore proper condensing does not take place causing the refrigerant to pool in the condenser and starving the evaporator. This causes a lower temperature in the evaporator resulting in "freeze up" which is often mistaken for a loss of refrigerant.
The proper thing to be done is to block off the condenser air causing the high side pressure to rise until the eqivillant of 110*F condensing temperature.
You can also install a low ambient kit which will cycle the compressor off when the temperatures fall

Condensing unit continues to run after air handler is stopped. Problem is intermittent. Thermostat replaced. Suspect air handler relay. which one?

When this happens, most often you'll have a stuck contactor coil on the condenser. If you buy it , it should cost $20---to 15.00 and you can add if you turn off the power (240volts) and the furnace power!
