Question about Dell UltraSharp 1704FPT 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Monitor shutdown also

I have 3 of these monitors that also shut down on their own.
Two will not turn on at all (no response from power button)
and the third will work for a short time
then the top of the screen gets brighter then shuts off.
It is possible to turn this monitor back on but it will only stay on
for a second or up to about a minute.

It is not the power cord or video card. Old CRTs work fine on the
computers and the 1704 monitors have been moved to different computers
and have experienced the same problems.

Do all LCDs have a much shorter life than CRTs or does Dell have a
problem with these products?

Hi this is the way how to examine what's wrong with your LCD monitors. Power on both CPU and monitor. After they shut down on their own, you check that you can see the image on the screen by shining a flashlight into the screen, not directly but find the best angle to the screen and take a look very closely. If you can see the icons or any image, there will be a minor problem. Like me, I can see window image using flashlight and check lamps inside. Some of them were broken. If you cannot see anything on the screen, there'll be some problems with inverter board. If you have soldering tool and want to fix it by yourself, check the caps first. It may cause this problem. Some caps might show leaking or burn spot on the board because of too high temp. If you don't have soldering tool, you better go get a technician to do so.

peterballeng, Read my other response on a viewsonic VX910 in my fixya profile. You will find out your options to the black screen of death you are having trouble with. Do you know how to do the simple flashlight test for SMPS evaluation of LCD monitor power supply status! 12fixlouie on fixya, aka louie12fix Pete, sounds like SMPS is in SHUTDOWN mode. Do a comment after your evaluation.

Hannspree HF-289H LCD Monitor not displaying anything.

conor455, I am sorry to hear that your lc display has been struck down with the "BLACK screen of DEATH". Most likely the "switch-mode-power-supply/inverter supply" has failed!!! If your monitor is out of warranty then i suggest that you find your way to my fixya profile and read some of the responses I and others have already written about the BLACK screen symptom and what you can do to try and repair it!! YOUR DISPLAY IS SICK. The SMPS is in SHUTDOWN mode trying to save itself from further damage and or catastrophic nonrecoverable failure. eg. sparks, smoke, fire!! Leave your monitor OFF and do a little bit of research of BAD electrolytic filter capacitors and other stuff that causes LCD backlight's to fail to light-up. Conor, when you asked "ANYONE KNOW THE PROBLEM?" all I can say is visit YOUTUBE and search for and view some of the longer vid clips of "lcd monitor disassembly and/or lcd monitor repair to help YOU to make a decision as to the fate of your HF-289H. Bye for now. If this info has been of some use, please rate this response on fixya! 12fixlouie aka louie12fix

L1932TQ LCD Monitor won't turn on.

I'm affraid you did about everything you can to find the issue. Trying to isolate the problem is the best way to come close to a solution eventually. But after all the tests you did, it seems that the monitor itself got a problem. I dont suggest you to try to fix it yourself, some electrical parts may need to be electrically discharged before being removed from the monitor. If your monitor is still in waranty, contact LG for support. Otherwise, you could bring it to a local tv/monitor store to see if they can repair it. LG support rep could also give you some advice, maybe they got a certified partner in your area that could take a look at it. P.S. If your computer is on windows XP it should shut down the usual way just by pressing the power button once. The shutdown will be the same as if you go Start->Shutdown->Shutdown the computer.

Starlogic 20 inch widescreen monitor screen keeps going black

This is probably a back light problem. Take a bright flashlight and while the monitor is on, point it at the LCD and try different angles, etc. If you can see an image, it is the back light, probably the back light voltage converter unit in the lcd. It could also be the back light bulbs.

If you don't see an image with the flash light, then it could be the main logic board.

Will not close down

These monitors go into a standby just incase you are only restarting the PC.
To turn it off properly, hit the power button on the monitor before Windows has completely turned the computer off.

IE: tell Windows to shutdown, when you see the blue screen telling you Windows is shutting down, turn it off then.

Hope that helps
